Bremond Lady Tigers and the Ganado Maidens
How Bremond got here: With a 9-5 district record, Bremond grabbed the final playoff spot in their district behind Thorndale, Granger, and Thrall. Bremond defeated Mason 7-6 in the Bi-District round and they defeated Centerville 9-2 in the Area playoff round. In the Regional Quarterfinal round, they defeated district rival Thorndale 10-7. Thorndale had outscored opponents 284-119 and ranked in the top 10 in the Texas Girls Coaches Association state rankings. Thorndale had defeated Bremond in both district meetings, including a 10 run rule victory. Bremond has a 22-9 overall record.
How Ganado got here: With a 10-5 district record (including the tie-breaker game), the Maidens went into the playoffs as the number three seed. Ganado defeated Yorktown 12-2 in the Bi-District playoff game, Charlotte 10-9 in the Area game, and district opponent Shiner 4-1 and 3-2 in the Regional Quarterfinal round. Ganado has a 22-6 overall record.
For the season, the Maidens have scored 307 runs and allowed 117. Bremond’s complete stats are not available.
The Regional Semi-Final series will be held in Wimberly. Game one is Wednesday at 7. Game two is Thursday at 7 and game three, if necessary, is Saturday at 5. If the series goes to a third game, two Maidens will be graduating on Friday evening and coming right back for game three on Saturday.
If making a deep playoff run is something only seasoned playoff teams should be able to do, nobody told either of these teams. The 2020 softball season ended with no playoffs because of Covid 19, but in 2019, neither of these teams made the playoffs. However, the young Maidens have a history of success after making several runs to the state tournament as little leaguers.
There are only 16 teams still playing softball in 2A. Ganado, Bremond, Weimar, and Thrall are the four remaining teams in Region 4. Ganado and Weimar share a district as do Bremond and Thrall. After the Regional Quarterfinal round comes the Regional Final round where one of these four teams will move on to the state tournament.
