Cowgirls stepping up

In getting in as many games as they can, the Cowgirls (8-11) have been on a topsy-turvy win/lose status so far, but Head Coach Lynn Osborne said she’s pleased with where the team is at this point, despite them being unable to participate in one of their scheduled tournaments due to Hurricane Harvey.
The Cowgirls have played double duels for the last two Tuesdays, yesterday against Columbus and Bay City, and the week before against Victoria East and St. Joseph. Oddly enough, with each Tuesday, the Cowgirls lost and won a game.
“St. Joseph and Columbus are very good teams,” Osborne said. “But our girls are too, they’re having a hard time understanding that they’re ready to play at that level, but I think they’re starting to figure it out. It’s been a roller-coaster.”
Osborne stressed the double duels have been working in favor of Cowgirl stamina, and captains Raney Orsak and Hannah Weinmann agreed the team is learning everything they can from playing at least six, if not more, games in a row on a Tuesday.
“Coming back from a week off definitely took its tool, but as a team we learned that we need to go all out all the time, not matter how tired we might be,” Orsak said.
“I’m with Raney,” Weinmann said. “I think what we took out of those games is that, when you’re faced with a challenge you have to step up and react. The games in Karnes City showed us how badly you have to want the game in order to succeed.”
The Cowgirls have an open day this Friday, Sept. 15. On Tuesday, Sept. 19, they start district play on the Palacios volleyball court.
