Ganado kicks off after-school Pow-Wow Program
Phillips 66 partnered with the Ganado Volunteer Fire Department, City of Ganado and Jackson County to provide funding that will kick off a new after-school program for students in Ganado. The $14,000 grant was celebrated last week during a check presentation ceremony.
The After-School Pow-Wow Program is to be held at the First Baptist Church of Ganado. The program is in conjunction with the Jackson County Juvenile Probation Department to target youth at a critical age and provide an avenue for positive character development and greater scholastic achievement.
According to Jackson County Judge Jill Sklar, a similar after-school program has been implemented in Edna. This program has resulted in improved math and reading scores, as well as, increased the self-confidence and drive of the students and an overall more positive attitude towards learning.
“The goal of the program is to provide students with the assistance they need in math, science, reading and other core subjects,” said Sklar. “Each of the groups involved have worked hard to see this program come to fruition. It was the Ganado Volunteer Fire Department that believed Phillips 66 would be another great partner in achieving this goal. Without the generous contribution from Phillips 66, we would not have had the funding to get the program started.”
