Burn Ban lifted

 The burn ban for Jackson County has been lifted effective immediately. Anyone doing a controlled burn is asked to notify the Jackson County Sheriff's Office at 361-782-3541 before burning. Citizen's are still urged to use caution as the conditions for fires getting out of control still exist.

You've seen the signs and heard people ask the question, "Just what is a Mudder?" The easy explanation is that Tough Mudder is an "ironman" type competition designed by British Special Forces with part of the proceeds benefitting the Wounded Warriors program. The self-proclaimed "Toughest Event on the Planet" is coming to Brackenridge Park outside Edna Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 28-29, and bringing a truckload of people from all over the country and globe to Lake Texana's shores. Consultant says Edna is the next Sugar Land

David Partlow of BRR Consulting stood before Edna City Council Jan. 19 and reported that Edna has a great deal of room for development and relayed that several of the firms he had talked to had shown a positive interest in bringing a restaurant or hotel into town. In other Council business, David Rose applied for and was granted a Specific Use Permit for a planned RV park behind Sonic Drive-in, and the 2012-13 Street Repair Plan will be reconsidered in light of needed drainage repairs.

County has job openings

Jackson County is hiring. At their Jan. 23 meeting, commissioners approved authorizing vacant positions in the tax-assessor collector’s office, sheriff’s office, Pct. 2 and the district clerk’s office to be filled. No action was taken on creating and funding an additional temporary part-time position in the sheriff’s office. According to County Treasurer Mary Horton, current county employees are given the first opportunity to fill vacant positions before being advertised in the Jackson County Herald-Tribune and on the county Web site.

Signs regulated

State transportation officials want to remind Texans that it is a class C misdemeanor to place any sign on state highway right of way. The penalty is a fine of up to $500 per sign. It is legal to place a campaign sign on private property adjacent to state highways with landowners’ permission.

Committed to her causes

Edna resident Shirley McGill recently was named Jackson County Extension Education Club Woman of the Year for 2011. This was her second time to win the award. Her commitment to extension education community service projects, promotion of extension education and her continuous work to get Extension dinners together and volunteer hours tallied led to her nomination for the award. In 2009 she was honored for her work in compiling the Deutschburg and Sowders Club history after it was destroyed in the Jackson County...
Winter fun in the sun

The sky was clear and sunny and temperatures were in the mid-60s. Not what you would consider an ideal day for snow. However at the Main Event Center at Brackenridge Park outside of Edna there was lots of snow and more than 1,500 Crossroads residents showed up on Jan. 14 to attend the third annual Winter Carnival and Snow Day.
Although sisters Regan and Riley Slatter took advantage of all the attractions offered including the sand box, carnival–like games and the numerous bounce houses, both agreed that their favorite part of the event was...
It's harder than it looks

There was lots of snow for kids of all sizes at Snow Day and the Winter Carnival at the Main Event Center in Brackenridge Park on Saturday, Jan. 14. In addition to the snow activities, there were inflatables to play in, carnival games and hay rides. The snow slides are always a big hit providing thrills, chills and spills.

The Tough Mudder Extreme Obstacle Course event is just a little more than a week away and things will be gearing up in Jackson County for the 6,000 contestants who have paid to run the course.

IISD approves hiring a nurse

The Industrial ISD board of trustees voted to extend the contract of Superintendent Tony Williams until June 30, 2015 at their Jan. 9 regular board meeting. At Williams’ recommendation, he will not receive a salary increase for the 2012-2013 school year. Williams has served as superintendent of IISD since July 2006. He has also served the district as high school principal.

Tough Mudder crews have been hard at work at Brackenridge Park outside of Edna building the obstacle course for the Jan. 28 and Jan. 29 event. Billed as possibly the “toughest event on the planet,” 8,000 contestants from all over the world are expected to converge on Jackson County to accept the Tough Mudder challenge. The Chamber of Commerce and Lavaca-Navidad River Authority have held two community meetings to prepare businesses for the extra traffic.
