Softball playoffs move closer, baseball begins second round of district play

With a 4-1 win over Tidehaven on Tuesday night, the Edna Cowgirls (5-4) strengthened their chances to grab a playoff spot. Led by Delaney Doelitsch’s three hits and another strong pitching performance by Shanti Guerra (11 strike outs), Edna knocked Tidehaven two games out of the playoff hunt and a game behind Industrial.

The Cobras (4-5) had a tough game against district co-leader Columbus, losing 9-1. The loss has Industrial sitting in fifth place, but still in control of their destiny moving forward.

With five district games remaining, Edna still has to face both Hallettsville (8-1) and Columbus (8-1), while Industrial still has Hallettsville on the schedule. Industrial has Rice (0-9) and Palacios (2-7) on their schedule with third place Yoakum (6-3) and Edna being huge games in determining the Cobras fate.

Edna also has to face both Palacios and Rice making the meeting with Industrial very important to their playoff chances. Because Edna lost both match-up against Yoakum, finishing the district in a tie with the Lady Bulldogs would still give Yoakum a higher seeding.

Tidehaven and Yoakum still have to face each other and they both still have Columbus and Hallettsville on the schedule.

Because of Good Friday, the usual Friday games have been moved to Thursday, but with the threat of heavy rain in the forecast, the game time and date could change again.

Edna is scheduled to host Rice on Thursday while Industrial will play at Palacios.

Ganado easily took care of Moulton 24-1 in three innings. Maiden Bella Adrian had a great sports day, finishing 9th at the district golf tournament (in only her second year playing golf) to lead all Maidens, and then showed up and knocked another home run, her fifth of the year, in the softball game.

All eyes will be on the Maiden (9-1) and Weimar (9-1) game, scheduled for Thursday in Ganado. If Weimar wins, they will basically wrap up the district title. If the Maidens win, they will move into sole possession of first place, but will still have to defeat Shiner (8-2) next week to take the district title. The Maidens have four district games remaining.

All three Thursday softball games are scheduled for 6 p.m.

Behind a 9-5 victory over Tidehaven, the Edna Cowboys (4-4) moved into a tie for third place in district. This game marked the beginning of the second round through the playoffs.

The Industrial Cobras (4-4) fell to Columbus (6-2) and are now also tied for third. Yoakum sits just behind the three team tie.

Hallettsville (8-0) remains atop the district. Both Industrial and Edna have time to climb their way out of the tie and move up in the district standings.

Ganado currently sits in a tie with Schulenburg for the final playoff spot.
