August Ernest “Gus” Westhoff II was born July 11, 1947, to Sarah Mavis and William Tips Westhoff, Jr. in Victoria, TX.

Gus graduated from Edna High School in 1965 and went on to earn a degree in Plant Science from Sam Houston State University. He married the love of his life, Judy Vance Westhoff, on August 16, 1969. They settled in Edna to begin their family and Gus’ long career at Westhoff Mercantile Co. He was very proud of the long history of his family company, which was founded in 1889 by his great-great grandfather.

Gus served his community on many committees, including the Boards of the Edna Independent School District, the Jackson County Bank, and the Lavaca Navidad River Authority. He also served as the President of the Board of St. Agnes Catholic Church and as President of the Edna Lions Club.

In high school, Gus played football, and although he never played past high school, his love of the game led to becoming a football referee. He refereed many local and area games and then moved on to larger school games in the Houston area. The highlights of this refereeing career were calling a state playoff game in the Astrodome and another in Texas Stadium in Dallas.

In his younger years, Gus loved to rodeo. He inherited this love of rodeo from his father. Horseback riding, tie-down calf roping, heading and healing, and cutting horses were a few of his favorite things to do on his family’s ranch. In later years, if you couldn’t find him whistling around the store and assisting customers, you could find him playing 18 holes, tending to his garden, flying his plane, attending over 30 years of dance recitals for his girls, jogging to the Pointer Sisters, catching a big red fish, or hitting the slopes on a family ski trip.

Gus is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Judy Westhoff, their three daughters, Elizabeth Anne Simons and her husband, Travis, of Inez; Laura Catherine Chessher and her husband, Reagan, of College Station; and Anna Dell Pack and her husband, Sam, of Sugar Land. Gus is also survived by his grandchildren, West Simons, Kate Simons, Callaway Chessher, Caroline Chessher, Briggs Pack, and Loc Pack, as well as his brothers and sisters, Kay and Bill Cratty, Fred and Lisa Westhoff, and Cindy and Merritt McNeel.

Pallbearers for his service included Travis Simons, Reagan Chessher, Sam Pack, Blake Westhoff, William Westhoff, John Vance, Cullen Vance, and West Simons. Honorary Pallbearers are Callaway Chessher, Briggs Pack, and Loc Pack.

Gus will be remembered for his kindness, integrity, and unwavering dedication to his family and community. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 29, 2024, at Oaklawn Funeral Home in Edna.

Memorials may be given to the Everard and Bertha Dell McDowell Memorial Scholarship, in care of Citizens State Bank, 701 N.

Betty Sue Shaw, 72, lost her fight with Parkinson’s Disease on November 19th, 2024, while surrounded by family. Betty Sue was born August 7th, 1952, in Victoria, TX to Eldred and Janice Bergstrom. She graduated from Edna High School where she met her husband, Kenny Shaw, of 49 years. They went on to have 2 sons, Kenneth Wayne Shaw Jr. in 1972 and Klinton Wade Shaw in 1979. Many remember Betty Sue for her work as the principal secretary at WCJH, a job she held and loved for 25 years. Once retired, she spent a lot of time at the bay house with her longtime girlfriends, stirring up whatever trouble they could get into. If you ever sat down to talk with her, she was quick to reminisce about the old days or brag about her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her love for her family was evident until her final days. Rodeo was a big part of Betty Sue and Kenny’s lives, from watching their sons rope from a young age, to hosting memorial roping’s in Klint’s honor. When not at rodeos or watching rodeo on TV, she loved having days when her yard was full of trucks with horse trailers and the working pens were full of cattle.

Betty Sue was the epitome of tough as nails. From losing a child at an early age to fighting Parkinson’s disease for 42 years, she faced everything in life with grit and tenacity.

Betty Sue is preceded in death by her parents, Eldred and Janice Bergstrom; husband, Kenny Shaw; brother, Bobby Bergstrom; and son, Klinton Shaw.

Betty Sue is survived by her son, Kenneth Shaw Jr. and wife, Kandy of Pledger; grandchildren, Kody Shaw and wife, Paige of Sweeny, Krissy Shaw of Pledger, and Kassey Stedman and husband, Kasey of Brazoria; great-grandchildren Wyatt, Emma, Kyla and Hadley.

Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m. on Monday, November 25, 2024, at C.T. She was born April 2, 1927 in Ganado, Texas to Joe and Millie Surovec. She graduated from high school in 1944 and was married at Assumption Catholic Church on June 15, 1948. Lexie shared 62 wonderful years with Louis, the love of her life. From this union, her three children Debbie, Janice, and Kent were born.

While her children were young, they attended St. Agnes Catholic School where Lexie helped the Cordi Marian Sisters, the teachers through the Diocese of San Antonio, with whatever they needed. She took a special interest in the school carnivals and spent many hours donating her time to help make them fun, creative, and successful. Later when her children were older, she became a working Mom, first, at Moo Moo Milk Store, Zlotnik’s, and then Sears Catalog Center where she stayed for many years until she retired so that she could spend more time with her children and grandchildren whom she loved dearly. In addition, not only was she a very good seamstress, making clothes for her children when they were young, she also helped them with clothing alterations and repairs for her grandchildren as they began to arrive. And of course, she spent many hours working in her flower beds, canning, and cooking produce from Louis’s bountiful garden. Lexie loved preparing meals and desserts for her family, always trying new recipes while perfecting old ones.
