Edna ISD Athletics has announced the upcoming 2026 Edna Football Camp for young athletes entering the third through ninth grades for the 20262027 school year. Head football coach Jamie Dixon and his staff are preparing to welcome the future of Cowboy Football to Cowboy Memorial Stadium this summer. The two-day camp offers quality instruction to give participants an early opportunity to learn the official Cowboy Football System.

The camp is scheduled to take place on July 28 and July 29 from 9 to 11 a.m. On the first day, campers need to report to the stadium at 8:30 a.m. for camp orientation and the handing out of camp shirts. Participants are expected to bring their own cleats, shorts and t-shirts for the workouts. The total registration cost to attend the summer program is $40.00 per athlete.

On Facebook, Coach Dixon specifically urged parents to turn in the registration forms pretty quickly because he needs to secure a rough estimate for the camp shirts ahead of time.

How to Sign Up

Parents must submit the completed registration form along with the entry fee before the July 8 deadline. There are multiple ways to turn in the paperwork. Registration slips and payments can be mailed directly to Cowboy Football c/o Coach Dixon at 601 North Wells, Edna, TX 77957. Families can also choose to drop off the forms in person on Monday through Thursday mornings while morning workouts are actively underway. Alternatively, forms can be dropped off at the school administration building or handed directly to any of the boys’ coaches. All checks must be made payable to Edna ISD Athletics.

For any further questions regarding the camp, parents can reach out to Coach Dixon by phone at 361-782-3573 ext. 2020 or via email at jdixon@ednaisd.org.

The Industrial Cobras traveled to the Tidehaven State Qualifying Tournament on Friday, June 12, looking for redemption and a punched ticket to State.

Unfortunately for the Cobras, their path to the 7-on-7 state tournament came to an end after a hard-fought 27-20 loss to Agua Dulce in the semi-final State Qualifying Round.

Industrial entered the Tidehaven after a frustrating result at the Rice Consolidated tournament, where a misinterpretation of the official three-way tie-breaker rules cost them a spot. Friday’s pool play in Tidehaven proved to be a gauntlet.

Drawn into Pool B, the Cobras faced off against their cross-county rivals, the Ganado Indians, who had already locked up a state berth at their own tournament a week prior. In a tight, back-and-forth matchup, Ganado edged out Industrial 19-12. The Cobras then stumbled against a tough East Bernard squad, dropping their second game 26-9. However, the team bounced back in their final pool play game, routing Wallis Brazos 27-6.

Despite a 1-2 record in pool play, the bracket dynamics and Ganado’s previously secured qualification opened the door for Industrial to advance to the crossover State Qualifying Round. There, they squared off against Pool A’s Agua Dulce with a state tournament berth on the line.

The Cobras and the Longhorns traded blows in a competitive game, but Agua Dulce ultimately managed a late defensive stop to secure a 27-20 victory, punching their own ticket to State and bringing Industrial’s summer 7-on-7 run to a close.

The Texas State 7-on-7 Tournament is on June 25-26.

Summer football 7 on 7 leagues have begun qualifying teams for the state tournament. Ganado hosted a tournament on Saturday and Industrial played the previous week and despite finishing the round-robin tournament with a 2-1 record, did not qualify for the state tournament.

However, according to the rules of 7 on 7, Industrial should have been the one of the teams to grab a spot in the state tournament.

In a tournament of eight teams, as was the case at the Rice Consolidated tournament as well as the Ganado tournament, the top two teams lock up a spot in the state tournament. Four teams are divided into two pools and each team within the pool plays the other three teams in the same pool once. When those games are done, the top two teams from each pool play in two semi-final games, and the winners advance to State.

Oftentimes a tie-breaker will come into play, as was the case with Industrial. Industrial, Van Vleck, and Rice finished at 2-1 in pool play, with only two teams moving forward. The first step in the tie-breaker is head-tohead but Industrial lost to Rice, Van Vleck lost to Industrial and Rice lost to Van Vleck.

According to the official 7 on 7 rules handbook in a state qualifying tournament “In a threeway tie, only the scores of the games between teams in the tie will be counted. Once a winner has been declared, the remaining two teams will revert back to head-to-head to break the remaining tie.”

Head-to-head, Van Vleck defeated Rice 2120, Industrial defeated Van Vleck 14-13 and Rice defeated Industrial 37-6. Points scored in the games between the three teams involved left Rice with 58 points scored, Van Vleck with 35, and Industrial with 20 meaning Rice advanced as the number one team. However, once the winner is determined, points don’t matter as the rules state it reverts back to head-to-head, which the Cobras won 14-13.

Instead Van Vleck and Rice won their semi-final games and locked up a place in the tournament.

Industrial will try again to lock up a spot at the Tidehaven on June 12.

At the Ganado tournament, Ganado and Boling qualified for the State meet.

The State 7 on 7 tournament will be held June 25 and 26.

Heading into the opening game of the Regional Semi-Final playoffs between the Ganado Maidens and the Danbury Panthers, the Ganado Maidens had been rolling through opponents.

Shiner put up 2 runs against Ganado on April 12. Since that game, the Maidens hadn’t allowed a run in any of the four games between. In their previous three playoff games, Ganado had outscored their opponent a combined 62-0. In the circle, Saylor Bures had thrown three straight no hitters in the playoffs.

The Maidens had a much tougher series in the Regional Semi-Finals, winning the series 2-0 and 9-2 to advance to the Regional Finals.

In game one, Bures needed her lights-out pitching as the offense struggled to find any hits against Danbury.

The Maidens bats were connecting, but the potential hits weren’t finding many holes. Ganado picked up five hits in game one and only struck out twice.

Kalyn Benavides singled and then Raelynn Pena didn’t have to worry about her hit finding a hole as she crushed a two-run home run to give the Maidens a 2-0 lead.

“I was just trying to stay calm and put a good swing on the ball, so seeing it go over the fence was really exciting,” Pena said about her homer. “I felt like I was seeing the ball pretty well in game one. The coaches told us what types of pitches they throw and what to expect, so I stayed patient at the plate and looked for something I could drive.”

After getting a lead, Bures allowed a double in the sixth innings, but nothing more and Ganado won 2-0.

Pena played the playoff game every kid dreams of: she had three hits in the, she had what turned-out to be the game-winning homer, and she added a double to her tally.

After a tight game one, Ganado came out in game two determined to get on the board early.

Laci Holt got things running when she smacked a lead-off triple. Kyla Stancik doubled and Benavides doubled and Ganado quickly held a 2-0 lead. With the chance to add more damage to her tally in the series, Danbury chose to walk Pena.

“When they intentionally walked me early in game two, I took it as a sign of respect,” Pena said. “Of course, I always want the opportunity to swing the bat and help my team that way, but getting on base still gives us a chance to create offense. I just stayed focused on supporting my teammates and doing whatever I could to help us win.”

In the bottom of the first a Danbury walk followed by an RBI double game Danbury their first run of the series.

With Ganado again holding a slim 2-1 lead, Hallie Bures crushed a home run in the second inning to give Ganado a 3-1 lead.

“(Having a game like this) feels amazing but I feel more than joy to have been able to perform for my team in the playoffs,” Hallie explained. “Especially in a game like that where every moment matters.

I feel like I do my best under pressure, and those are the moments we have worked for all season.

But it definitely was all a team effort, in games where I haven’t stepped up as much, my other teammates have, so I’ve been trying to do my best to return the favor.”

Pitching again took over in the middle innings, and Danbury added their second run in the fifth to pull to 3-2.

“I think game two we came with more grit,” Hallie explained. “After game one seeing how close the score was, hearing the other stands chants, seeing the signs.

We came out hungrier and more determined.

We weren’t going to let anyone get close to taking our opportunity away from us. I think our intensity and resilience showed the entire second game. Everyone bought in every inning and produced. Our group of girls have played together since little league. We all want the same thing, and all have the same goals, and will do anything to achieve them!”

In the sixth, Ganado finally put together a big inning.

Raelynn Peters doubled and scored on a H.

Bures triple. Holt added an RBI single and the Maidens headed to the sixth with a 6-2 lead.

After Danbury went down in order, the Maidens loaded the bases on two walks and a hit-by-pitch and Avery Torres singled in a run.

H. Bures followed with an RBI groundout and a Holt sacrifice fly left the Maidens with a 9-2 lead and after a quick bottom of the seventh, the Maidens moved on to the Regional Finals.

Ganado (30-2-1) will face Thorndale (17-18-1) in the Regional Finals.

Game One: Danbury 0 Ganado 2 Raelynn Pena 3 hits, homerun, double, 2 RBI’s; Kalyn Benavides 1 hit; Hallie Bures 1 hit, 1 steal; Saylor Bures 7 innings, 1 hit, 9 strikeouts.

Game Two: Ganado 9 Danbury 2 H. Bures home run, triple, 4 RBI’s; Holt 2 hits, triple, 2 RBI’s; Benavides 2 hits, double, 1 RBI; Kyla Stancik 2 hits, double, 1 RBI; Avery Torres 1 hit, 1 RBI; Raelynn Peters 1 double; S.

Bures 7 innings, 5 hits, 2 runs, 1 earned run, 8 strikeouts.

Edna Cowboys Cornell Norman, Phoenix Robertson and Keegan Hicks signed their letters of intents last week at a signing ceremony at the Edna Dome Gym.

Cornell signed to play football at Texas Wesleyan, Robertson to play football at Sul Ross, and Hicks to run track at the University of Houston.

“Texas Wesleyan gave me an opportunity that not a lot of other college coaches did,” Cornell explained. “The atmosphere was great. They are highly focused on academics which is something I strive for.” Norman will study Psychology at Texas Wesleyan.

Robertson made his choice based on several factors.

“Sul Ross was the best, most outstanding offer I had and it really fit well with the Sustainable Ag Management degree I am going to go into,” Robertson explained. “It is a well-known school for that, so it sets me up successfully there and Sul Ross has been a really interesting school for me because my brother went to West Texas A&M and they play each other and are rivals.”

Hicks got his name on the radar all over the state when he set the National mark at the Goliad track meet. After the meet, Hicks made his choice.

“I can’t wait to run with coach Lewis and run the workouts those guys are doing and to see what my future holds in track,” Hicks said. Coach Lewis is a nine time olympic gold winner and U of H alum. Hicks isn’t sure what his major will be yet.

Cowboy Head Football Coach and Athletic Director Jamie Dixon explained what the players meant to him.

“These are a great group of guys,” Dixon explained. “Me? I was happy to be on the same sideline as them finally, and not looking across the field. They’ve had a lot of success here at Edna and you couldn’t ask for three better young men.

“To start, Phoenix is a true Cowboys, He is a tough kid, played through a little bit of injury for us, switched positions in football, and did whatever he could do to help the team win.”

Hicks had offers for football and track, but chose track.

“Keegan had a chance to go play football and run track. Probably the fastest guy I’ve ever coached. At the Goliad track meet at the beginning of the year, he ran the 100 meter dash, and we haven’t even left the track meet and the phones are already ringing, asking if that is legit time. The Goliad coaches said ‘coach, everyone is asking us about this time. A little later you have Carl Lewis saying ‘Please come to Houston.’ He was patient, he didn’t jump the gun.

In football, every time you gave him the ball he had a chance to go score.

“Cornell is a great young man. I can’t say enough things about Norman. I was talking to another coach the other day and I said ‘that young man is going to be a great husband, father… everything one day. He is going to do great things. He has a chance to start as a freshman. He is humble. He is an exceptional young man in the classroom. He will do great things.

Norman has an opportunity to get playing time as a freshman.

“I’m looking to start off as a rotational player, and that did factor into my choice,” Norman explained. “Offensive tackle. Left or right side…wherever the coach needs me to play.”

Norman had an advantage as he was already familiar with the Texas Wesleyan coaching staff.

“I visited the campus and I really liked it. I like how big everything is at Texas Wesleyan. I had gone to a Texas Wesleyan Camp sophomore year.”

Robertson also has an opportunity for early playing time.

“Freshman year, they said making special teams is what I can expect but they said if I can make this other position, an outside linebacker, they said they would be proud of me for that but said they expect special teams.”

Hicks still has a high school goal to accomplish before leaving for college as he is still running track for the Cowboys.

“We had some bumps in the road with injuries but we keep fighting every day, doing what we need to do so we should be good,” Hicks said.

When Ganado Maiden Kalyn Benavides came to the plate in the fifth inning of the Maidens district game against Weimar, she already had an amazing game, putting two homers on the board, but by the time the game ended, Benavides had a history- making game. She hit two more home runs, helping the Maidens secure a 16-0 victory.

“I saw my hitting instructor Brent Bubela the night before the game,” Benavides said.”So leading up to my at bats, I felt confident and relaxed.” Benavides hit all four home runs off the same pitcher.

When the Maidens won the State Championship last year, Benavides had a great season, tying for the team lead with eight home runs. With her four-homergame on Tuesday, Benavides broke the Ganado softball record for home runs in a game. The game brings her season total to 13, which leads all of 2A, and puts her in a tie for 13th across all classifications.

“It is a cool accomplishment but I know the season is not done yet and that can change,” Benavides said about her home run total. “I’m not going to dwell on that and whatever happens happens.”

And she is only a junior.

As a freshman, Benavides hit four homers before jumping up to eight last year. Now she has 13 with two district games to go before the playoffs.

Last year she also led the team in batting average with a .542 mark and runs batted in with 55. In the Weimar game, she added eight RBI’s bringing her season total to 42.

Softball has always been in Benavides’ life and she hopes to continue playing at the next level.

“I don’t have a dream college, but my dream is to go to a college that will help me meet my goals and help me grow to become the best version of myself,” she explained.

On Tuesday, the Maidens will face Shiner for the district title. Both teams will have one game remaining, but if the Maidens win against Shiner, they win the district but that is only the start of where the Maidens want to get. Facing teams like Shiner and Weimer and difficult teams in tournaments will help the Maidens as they enter the playoffs.

“Playing bigger schools and seeing different pitching will definitely get us prepared for our run in the playoffs,” Benavides concluded.

The softball playoffs begin on April 20.
