Sandra Louise Unger Smiga

    Sandra Smiga, of Edna, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 18, 2022 at the age of 70. Sandra was born on Thursday, February 14, 1952 in Ganado, Texas to Simon Harrison Unger and Betty Koop Unger.

    Sandra married the love of her life, Kenneth Smiga on July 24, 1970, and together they raised their three children, Lance, Jenny and Wendy. Sandra is survived by her loving family, husband, Kenneth Smiga, daughter, Jenny Smiga and her son, Lance Smiga and his wife Sara, her beloved grandchildren, Quintin Ross Kirk, and his wife Alyssa Gonzales Kirk, Bailey Elizabeth Kirk, Harrison Meade Smiga and Amelia Ann Smiga. She is also survived by her sisters, Marsha Vaughn and her husband Billy, Jeannie Owens and her husband Ray and her sisters-in-law, Sherri Unger and Susan Smiga.

    She has been preceded in death by her parents, brother, Charles Unger, sister, Donna Marie Holm, and her daughter, Wendy Colette Smiga Kirk.

    Sandra loved family life, and was very involved with her children, grandchildren, and church.

    She was a Girl Scout Leader for 20 years, she had her own day care in her home, and truly adored each and every child that graced her door. She was a very active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, and was the church secretary for 8 years, was on the Altar Board, designed baptismal banners and church banners, taught week day school, and Sunday School. When she wasn’t busy, she loved to gamble in Louisiana, take family trips to Disney World, and scratch a few lotto tickets. She was quite luck in lotto, every now and then. Sandra was a very creative and talented person, and loved crafts, painting, and woodworking. She had many talents, many hobbies, and had a life well lived, but her greatest joy and legacy are her grandchildren.

    They were blessed to be loved fiercely by their Gaagaa, as they lovingly called her.

    Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, September 22, 2022 at Redeemer Lutheran Church beginning with Visitation from 9:30 am to 11 a.m., followed by the Funeral Service at 11 a.m., with Pastor Andy Schroer officiating.

    There will be a private family interment at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Redeemer Lutheran Church.

    Services have been entrusted to Russell Todish of Slavik Funeral Home, 209 N. Allen St., Edna, TX 77957, 361-782-2152.
