Luther M. Hamilton, Jr.

Luther M. Hamilton, Jr.was born in Smiley, Texas on February 25,1923 to Luther M. Hamilton, Sr. and Dixie Glover Hamilton. He passed away on Wednesday, July 19, 2017. At the age of three, his family moved to Edna. Luther received his public education in the Edna School System. During his senior year, he was named captain of the football, basketball and track teams. After graduating from Edna High School in 1941, he enrolled at Southwest Texas State College, completing one semester. He joined the United States Air Force in 1941 at the beginning of World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1946, but remained in the Air Force Reserve until 1963 and retired with the rank of Lt. Colonel. He then returned to Southwest Texas State College to complete his education and play football. While in college, Luther married his high school sweetheart, Alice Curlee, on November 28, 1946. 

After Luther received his college degree in 1948, he accepted the position of head football coach at Yorktown, Texas for four years. Luther was offered an assistant football coaching position at Edna High School, which brought him back home to a thirty-two year career with the Edna Independent School District. Luther held numerous positions from 1952 thru 1984. His final years with Edna ISD he served as Superintendent.

Luther is survived by his two sons; Bruce and his wife Susan Hamilton, Jerry and his wife Tange Hamilton, his five grandchildren; Heather Breitenbach and her husband Shawn, Holly Camilli and her husband Tony, Jacob Hamilton and his wife Chaley, Rebecca Hamilton, and Kathryn Hamilton. His two Great-Grandchildren; Isabella Camilli and Chloe Camilli. He is preceded in death by his wife Alice Hamilton, his parents, and his brother Sylvan Hamilton.

Visitation will be Friday, July 21, 2017 from 6-8pm at the First Baptist Church in Edna. Services will be Saturday, July 22, 2017 at 10am also at the First Baptist Church in Edna with Reverend Robert Krause officiating. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens of Edna.
