John Michael McAfee

Mike McAfee, 79, formerly of Ganado, passed away, June 19, 2019, in Edmond, Okla. Mike was born on March 1, 1940, to Patti and Bud McAfee in Vandalia, Ill. He was baptized in the First Baptist Church of Ganado.     Mike was one of the great all-around athletes, garnishing All District honors four consecutive years in the major sports – football, basketball, baseball and track. His gifted ability to relate to young people made him a natural in coaching and with his quick-witted mind proved that he had a knack at helping them not only improve on their athletic techniques but also the rules of sportsmanship in all areas. He was the only athlete from Ganado High School to be selected to play in the Basketball South All Star Game. After graduation from high school in 1958, his education continued at Wharton Junior College on a basketball scholarship.     Mike was an accountant for Armco Steel Corporation in Houston, Texas for 20 years. His life after retirement was filled by serving as a caretaker to his parents. He was fortunate to share his penultimate 14 years with his sister, Jan.     Mike is survived by his son, Shawn McAfee (Karen) and three grandsons, Ryan, Brett and Hayden; daughter, Kelly Fisher (Brian) and three granddaughters, Caraline, Sophie and Meredith, all from Longview, Texas; sister, Jan Gardiner of Edmond, Oklahoma; brother-in-law, John Sanders of Dallas; three nieces and four nephews.     He was preceded in death by sister, Shirley Carroll and brother-in-law Bill Carroll; sister, Juanita Sanders; brother-in-law, Ron Gardiner; nephew Hank Carroll, and cousin, Joe McCrary.     A memorial service was held on Lake Keystone and burial will be in Ganado.
