Harry V. Simons

    Harry Venner Simons, 89, native of Edna, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Friday, Aug. 11, 2017. He was born in Edna on July 3, 1928, the oldest child of Thomas Kerr and Kate Simons.       Harry was born and raised in Edna and was a graduate of Edna High School. He served in the U.S. Army on a tour in Korea and was very proud of that service. He attended many reunions of his unit and enjoyed being in the company of his military friends that served with him. After moving to Houston he worked for General Electric for 36 years, retiring in 1988.  He was a member of the Bering United Methodist Church in Houston.       In 2008 he moved to Lewisville to be closer to family. He spent the years since moving there going to his Army reunions, hosting visits from friends and family and enjoying his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.       Harry was also a lifelong enthusiast of railroading. He spent innumerable hours at rail yards, talking to workmen, befriending many, and enjoying just being around trains and train yards. He collected train magazines, books, timetables, maps and other railroad memorabilia.       He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, George F. Simons and granddaughter, Jennifer Christine Roth.       Harry is survived by his two daughters, Dr. Miriam Barnard and her husband Dr. Wayne Barnard of Nashville, and  Mylinda Roth and her husband John Fuhrmann of Little Elm; grandchildren Katie Barnard of New York, Lt. Colin Barnard and his wife Thea of Norway, Thomas Martin of Lake Dallas, Kerri Roth and Ronnie Vick of Sanger, and Timothy Roth of Sanger; great-grandchildren Stella Barnard, Savanah Martin, Keaton Lee, Halie Roth, Alli Perry, Lillian Vick and Rayleigh Vick. Also his sister Ruth and her husband Joe Ray of Boerne, and brother James Simons of Edna. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, and many long time friends.       He also loved to tell jokes and share funny stories with anyone and brought pleasure to many.  He was deeply loved and will be missed by all who knew him.     A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Edna.     Arrangements under the direction of Local Cremation & Funerals, Dallas, 214-343-4040.
