Barbara Ann (Powers) Holley

Barbara Ann (Powers) Holley

November 8,1937 - June 7, 2026 Barbara Ann Powers Holley passed away on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at the age of 88. She was bom in Edna, Texas on November 8, 1937 to the late George Clifton Powers and Mary Ursula Gerdes Powers. Barbara enjoyed her childhood in Refugio and often shared her stories of this time. When she was in high school, the family moved to California, where she graduated. For the rest of her life, she maintained close friendships with many of her dear classmates from Refugio and from California. Upon the family’s return to Texas, they settled in Edna, where Barbara worked at the Jackson County Tax Assessor-Collector’s Office.

Soon, she met Melvin Holley, who was stationed at Foster Field Air Force Base in Victoria. They married in 1958 and moved to California when Melvin was transferred to Travis Air Force Base. In 1967, they returned to Edna with their daughter, Vanessa.

Barbara enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, listening to music, especially Western Swing and fiddling, genealogy, travel, reading, and playing cards. Melvin and Barbara loved “hitting the road” in their motor home and they also traveled to Lake Tahoe several times per year.

When Barbara retired from the Tax Assessor-Collector’s Office and Melvin retired from Alcoa, this afforded them even more time to spend on the road.

In recent years, Barbara enjoyed her frequent outings with her daughter and grandson, visits on the phone with family and friends, weekly card games with a special group of ladies, and monthly meetings with the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.

Barbara is survived by her daughter, Vanessa Holley Harrah and son-in-law, Max Harrah, both of Edna; grandson, Jed Harrah, of Edna; brother, Carl “Corky” Powers, of Edna; sisterin- law, Jeanette Powers, of Austin; brother-in-law, Henry Holley and wife Linda, of Snyder; and sisterin- law, Estella Everett, of Throckmorton, as well as many nieces, nephews, and close friends.

In addition to her parents, Barbara is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 50 years, Melvin Holley; sister, Helen Powers Pesek Ramsey; and brothers, Noah Lee Powers and Clifford Powers.

A small family graveside service will take place at a future date.

The family wishes to send a special thank you to all those who supported Barbara at DeTar Hospital and the Hospice of South Texas Domburg Center of Compassion. In lieu of flowers or plants, donations may be made to the Hospice of South Texas Domburg Center or to the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Texana Chapter, Scholarship Fund.
