Janice La Nell Nelson passed away peacefully on May 1, 2026, at the age of 77.

LaNell was born on April 26, 1949, in Edna, Texas, to Johnny Clyde Wilkerson and Carmen Lucille Collins Wilkerson. She spent much of her life in Bay City, where she built a life centered on family, before recently moving to Colorado Springs to be near her grandchild.

She was known for her humor and kindness and touched the lives of many. As many knew, she had struggled with her health in recent years but never lost her ability to laugh or to love.

LaNell is survived by her husband, Charles “Chuck” Nelson; her sons, Dustin Nelson with wife Kelly and Shaun Nelson; as well as her grandchild, Aiden Nelson.

On the Wilkerson side, she is survived by her sisters, LaVerne Ellison and Ann Hessong (partner, Henry Peña); her sister-inlaw, Linda Wilkerson; her brother-in-law, Vernon Chapman; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Lucille Wilkerson; her brothers Clifford (wife LaNoe) and Donald Lynn Wilkerson; and her sisters, Nelda Faye Chapman and Catherine (husband Gene) Campbell and brother-in-law Richard Ellison.

On the Nelson side, she is survived by her sister-in-law, Jo Anne Hughes and her husband, Harry; her brother-inlaw, Ted Nelson and his wife, Georgie, Lynda Beth Johnson, as well as numerous nieces and nephews; and was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, James “Jimmy” Nelson, as well as her father- in-law and mother-in-law. A memorial service will be held on Friday May 22, 2026 at 10:00am at the Slavik Funeral Home chapel with Pastor Larry Green officiating.

LaNell will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
