DRT hosts essay contest winner

History was at the forefront as the Daughters of the Republic of Texas met March 14 at the Chamber of Commerce. President Jean Shores opened the meeting and thanked the 16 members and 5 guests for their attendance and the hostesses, Cindy Greer, Rusty Dvorak, Sherrie Shutt, and Gayle Roome for the lovely springtime decorations. She then called on Sue Quinn to give the Invocation after which Twinkie Harter and Bobbie Brune led the pledges to the United States and Texas flags.

Following this, President Jean called on Cindy Greer, Committee Member of the Essay Contest to introduce the guests. Cindy introduced Emily Craig, 4th grade student at the Edna Elementary School, and her parents, James and Stephanie Craig. Cindy said that although there were a lot of entries to the essay contest, very few students followed the rules in preparing their essays and there were no winners in the contest for the seventh grade, where the topic was Samuel Maverick.
