Water Tower Make Over Supports Youth

By John Meng, Managing Editor     The Edna skyline has changed slightly. The Hickory Street water tower, which in recent years promoted the town’s ‘Flag City’ motto, is now once again declaring the city as ‘Home of the Cowboys’ and ‘Home of the Cowgirls.’

Edna City Manager Gary Broz explained that the tower underwent needed maintenance. The interior of the tank was cleaned and other routine maintenance items were addressed, a process which is needed approximately every 15 years. During the maintenance cycle, the tower received a new coat of paint and new monikers highlighting the Edna school’s Cowboys and Cowgirls mascots.

“If there is one thing everyone in this town can agree upon is supporting our youth, and not just the teams but extending out to all the activities that our youth participate in – from sports to the band to one-act plays and choir. I think we can all agree that makes this town what it is,” said Edna Mayor Lance Smiga.  “Flag City will always be part of what Edna is and we don’t want to diminish that but, when I was growing up, that is what I remember the tower saying. I think it represents who we are, and puts some pride back in our youth.”

Broz said that the cost of the maintenance project was approximately $75,000.
