Overturned 18 wheeler shut down 59 overnight

An overturned 18-wheeler caused a portion of Hwy 59 South to close for over nine hours on Thursday evening.

“At 8:20 p.m. a 2015 Freightliner from Limarco Logistics LLC of Houston rolled on its side,” DPS spokesman Sergeant Ruben San Miguel said. “The driver was Orlando Mejia, 37 from Victoria. He was towing a 2010 tanker that was carrying butane. Mejia was travelling South on 59. He veered off the road, overcorrected, and the truck rolled on its side. It came to a rest on the roadway. No butane leaked.”

Hwy. 59 was shut down because the18-wheeler had to be set upright and the butane had to be moved over from the wrecked truck to different ones.

“Traffic was diverted to S.H. 111 and on to Hwy. 77 for southbound traffic,” San Miguel said. “Hwy. 59 reopened just before 6 a.m on Friday.

“The driver wasn’t injured and no citation has been issued at this time.”
