Ganado Police Officer Injured, Man Shot

At approximately 6 p.m. on Friday evening, a Ganado police officer was involved in a shooting in the 500 block of S. Third Street.

Ganado Police Chief David Merritt stated that Ganado Officer Pete Palomino, a two-year veteran on the department,  responded to a disturbance call on S. Third Street.

According to authorities at the scene, Palomino arrived and found that one of the male subjects involved in the disturbance was an individual with whom he had dealt with previously regarding a criminal trespass matter. The male subject appeared to be highly agitated.

Chief Merritt said the man quickly approached Palomino, drew a knife and began punching and attempting to stab him. Palomino drew his firearm and shot the subject one time in the abdomen.

Palomino suffered cuts and scratches on his neck, but his injuries were not life-threatening. The male subject was transported by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston and is currently recovering after surgery.

The Texas Rangers, a criminal investigative division of the Texas Department of Public Safety, is investigating.
