Friends of Edna brightens up city

This is the first part of a two-part article. Look to next week’s issue on Wednesday, June 4, to learn more about the plans from the Friends of Edna.

The Friends of Edna group has been going a year strong and are just getting started with what they hope to do. The nonprofit organization was behind the Cowboy sculpture, and the lights and boulders surrounding it.

Patt Schiewitz, chairman, said they accept members to help the cause, which means anyone who wants to step up to do one of the projects they have lined up, please step up.

“We’re just getting the word out about the projects, and it’s by a project to project basis that we ask for funds,” he said. “It’s not about contributing to the Friends of Edna.”

Some of these projects are underway, and some are still a dream at this point. For example, the wall on the side of All About Flowers is an ongoing project, but has been stalled due to weather, either rain or wind. This is because the contractor has been using an airbrush to do the work, and he has to paint at night while using his laptop to project the picture, trace the image, and fill it in with color the next day.

Those images will include an American flag, and soldiers from the four military services branches in black silhouette saluting, plus the seven names of the Edna soldiers who were lost in the war.

Some other projects FOE has finished are the finishing touches on the Edna alternative school, and the Christmas lights at the county courthouse. Others in the works are to add some flag fields in several locations, including the entrances to Edna on 59 and 111.

FOE is also looking for other mural sites with different pictures, like three kids fishing in a boat on the lake with an RV in the trees, a large American flag, and a collage of longhorn cattle, oil production and corn crops.

“We’re working on a project where we honor the founders of Edna, the male and female ones, and we want to come up with a big list of names, I’d hate to leave anyone off,” Schiewitz said. “We also thought downtown Edna to use a new coat of paint, so we have some proposed colors to take to the building owners. We want to know, if we pay for it, will they be in?”
