The future of the transit system in Jackson County, which has provided transportation to Jackson County residents for things like medical appointments, grocery runs, and more, faces an uncertain future, but there is some hope.
Recently, a press release from Friends of Elder Citizens announced that the Rural Public Transportation in Jackson and Matagorda counties was set to shut its doors completely in early April, after ceasing non-medical operations in March due to state budget cuts.
Senior Citizens were most affected by the news and were left trying to find their own way to important appointments on short notice.
Since then, Friends of Elder Citizens has informed the Golden Crescent Regional Planning Commission that they will continue their services “at a reduced level of service,” until the fiscal year ends, according to Friends of Elder Citizens President Dr. Lillian Solis-Smith. At that time, FOEC and GCRPC, along with local government entities, will revisit the discussion and decide the future of R-Transit.
