Talking About Jesus in Stories
How many of you like a good story? Everyone loves a good story. Whether it’s an action movie, an epic adventure, a romance, or a comedy - stories have a way of drawing us in. Even people who say they don’t like reading often enjoy a good movie or a podcast.
Stories are powerful vehicles that capture our imagination and stimulate our mind and emotions and can influence us in all kinds of ways (Samuel 12:1-15; Matthew 13:3). And I submit to you that this is no accident – it is by God’s design. For God has chosen to reveal Himself in the Bible, which is not just a story, but THE story, the story of reality that all other stories mimic in some way.
The Bible tells the story of humanity and creation’s fall and God’s rescue plan in Jesus Christ (Luke 24:25-27; 2 Tim. 3:14-17). Whether we like it or not, or whether we believe it or not, we are all a part of this story. Do you know this story?
Even if you don’t consider yourself religious or haven’t read much of the Bible, chances are you’ve heard something about Jesus. What if I told you His story is not only the turning point of the Bible, but also the turning point for countless lives – including mine?
There is something compelling about a changed life. Even in the Bible, when people encountered Jesus, they don’t often give long arguments or polished speeches – they just shared what He had done for them. The blind man who was healed by Jesus responded to the challenges of the Pharisees by sharing his story (John 9:10-11, 13-17, 24-25). Jesus told the man who had the Legion to go and tell what He had done for him (Mark 5:18-20). Even the apostle Paul shared his conversion story (Acts 22:1-21; 26:1-32; cp. 9:1-19).
I don’t claim to have all the answers. But I do believe this: there is something powerful in the story of Jesus. And I believe that God has invited us all into that story. The Bible says that what we do with Jesus shapes not only our present life, but our future too.
If you’ve never heard this story – or maybe never heard it in a way that makes sense – we would love to talk with you. The Christians at Robison Street are here, not because we have everything figured out, but because we’ve found something—or rather Someone—worth trusting. Can we share the story of Jesus with you?
