On April 16 club members went on a Road Trip to the National Museum of Funeral History in Houston, Texas. Members learned that Abe Lincoln’s funeral procession by train went from basically coast to coast! Wow! Washington’s funeral only cost $99.25. And these are only a couple of presidents’ final details found in the National Museum of Funeral History (for instance, JFK’s original eternal flame is on display). One section particularly timely to our near Easter April visit was the rock guarding portion illustrating the most burial of all time: a certified copy of the Shroud of Turin.
History of papal ceremonial rituals, native made coffins made in the shape of an animal or something related to a person’s occupation and even a processional bus to hold all those in the deceased’s entourage are just some of the varied exhibits that EBLC members were amazed by.
Truly the National Museum of Funeral History was and “educational experience like no other and offers something for everyone.” – even a gift shop where tee shirts were for sale stating “any day above ground is a good one”. A great field trip all the way around!
Afterwards the group lunched at the Black Bear Diner amid a plethora of black bear décor.
