After the first round of district play, the Ganado Maidens found themselves, sitting tied with Weimar for second in district, after both teams lost to Shiner, who sat number one in state and undefeated in district play.
When Shiner and Weimar met for the second time, Weimar toppled Shiner. Meanwhile, Ganado had an exciting, come-from-behind win against Weimar to set up the Shiner game for the district title.
When Ganado and Weimar met for the second time, Weimar had just defeated Shiner, putting the Maidens into a tie with Weimar, a game ahead of Shiner.
Weimar started out quickly, picking up four runs in the first inning and carried a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning, when the Maiden’s bat came alive and picked up two in the fifth and another two in the sixth to tie the game at 5.
With the game tied, Rhylee Green came to the plate and hit a first pitch, pinch-hit home run to give Ganado their first run of the game. After closing out the game, Ganade was set up for what was essentially the district title game with Shiner.
The first time of district play, both offenses were hot, but the Maidens couldn’t keep up with Shiner’s offense and the Lady Comanches won 147. This time, it was again an offensive game, but the Maidens were able to grab a 8-7 victory, after once again coming back from a deficit.
Shiner held a 5-2 lead before the Maidens exploded for 6 sixth inning runs to take an 8-6 lead. Shiner, the defending state champions, were not going to make it easy, as the game ended with the tying run at third.
After the win, Ganado just needed to defeat Flatonia, which they did 11-0 to win their first district title since 2022.
The Maidens will face Refugio in a best twoout- of-three Bi-Distyrict playoff at Sinton. Game one is Thursday April 24, at 6 p.m., game two is 20 minutes after game one. Game three, if needed, will be Friday May 25, at 7 p.m.
