Industrial High School won the Overall School Sweepstakes title by a scant four points over host Edna Friday at the District 25-3A UIL Academic Meet.
Industrial accumulated 434 points, edging out Edna at 430.
No one else was close. Hallettsville finished in third place at 216 points, followed by Yoakum at 146, Palacios at 145, Columbus at 127, Rice Consolidated at 91, and Tidehaven at 65.
According to Industrial UIL Coordinator Kathy Anderson, the Cobras have won the UIL Academic District Championship for 27 of the past 28 years.
Industrial senior Kaylee Cooper won Computer Science, Editorial Writing, Headline Writing, and News Writing, finished second in Feature Writing and in Mathematics, third in Science, and fourth in Copy Editing, accumulating 102 points as an individual for the Cobras academic team.
Fellow Journalism team member Whitney Kurtz added 43 points as an individual, winning Feature Writing, finishing second in Headline Writing and Editorial Writing, and sixth in News Writing.
Leading the way for Edna was Kyle Zheng, who won Calculator Applications, Mathematics, Number Sense, and Science, and finished third in Copy Editing, scoring 70 points as an individual for the Cowboys academic team.
Zheng’s sister, Tiffany, contributed 43 points to the Cowboys’ cause by winning the Accounting contest, finishing third in Calculator Applications and Editorial Writing, and fourth in Mathematics.
