Descendants of the settlers who fought and founded the Republic of Texas are now in their sixth or seventh generation from that origin and still gather to remember and honor those heroes.
Early descendants, a group of ladies met in Galveston in 1891 and established the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT) with the purpose “To perpetuate the memory and spirit of the men and women who achieved and maintained the independence of Texas.” In addition, they encourage historical research, preservation of documents and records, education, and celebration of Texas Honor Days.
In a meeting of the Texana DRT on April 13, President Vanessa Harrah gave an overview of the beginnings of the organization to the thirteen members present at the monthly meeting. She also led a planning session for the role of Texana Chapter in co-hosting a District meeting with the Fannin Chapter in Victoria which will be in September. The next Texana DRT Chapter will hold their monthly meeting on May 11 at the Farquhar Building in Edna. Texana DRT invites women who are interested in exploring and preserving Texas history to join.
