When Edna Cowboy Keegan Hicks lined up for the 100 meter dash at the Goliad Track meet, he was just hoping for a first place finish. When the race ended, after Hicks won the race by a large margin, he found out he now held the fastest 100 meter dash time in the nation this season.

“When I heard about the time after I ran, I knew that it was pretty fast, but I didn’t think it was leading the nation,” Hicks said about his run.

Hicks hopes to improve his time every time he runs, and studying his old runs helped him improve his time.

“The difference (this time) was critiquing my form, staying relaxed, and just running my race.”

This run also helped secure his college decision.

“When I ran the time, I got in touch with the coaches (at the University of Houston),” Hicks explained. “We had been talking for a while and I went on a visit Sunday night and Monday morning to the University of Houston and the hospitality was great, they showed me lots of love and so I had to take it and commit.

Hicks is involved in multiple other track events and was a star football player, but track will be his focus in college.

“I would love to put the pads on again but I think I’ll just stick to track. I want to study aviation, but that may be something I have to wait until after college to do so I’ll probably do Finance.

Hicks has two more regular season track meets to try to improve his time more before the aims for a state title or two in track.
