Last year, Ganado Maiden Kyla Stancik reached the pinnacle of high school softball when she won the MVP for her go-ahead (and game winning) hit in the state championship game.
On Monday, March 2, Stancik signed to continue to play softball at the University of Texas A&M - Victoria while studying kinesiology.
The coaching staff and location played a part in Stancik’s decision.
“I know the coaches pretty well,” Stancik said. “I have attended a practice where I also received my offer and have also attended a few games. The coaches played a part in my decision from the moment I met both of them. I felt very welcomed by both of them.”
Stancik delivered the big hit last year, but pitching is something she will continue to do as well.
“From the conversations I have had with the coaches, they do possibly see me in the pitching rotation and possibly some playing time at first. My preferred position is definitely pitcher.”
Stancik already knew the TAMU-V coaches before the championship game, but a good performance gave her more recognition.
“I had a relationship with the coaches at TAMU-Victoria before I received my MVP but it for sure helped get my name out there and made me stand out from other players.”
Being able to stay close to home is an added bonus.
“I’m not going too far and my mom also works in Victoria so I don’t believe I will get homesick but you never know,” Stancik explained. “I have already met a few girls on the team and made friends but can’t wait to make more.”
Before that happens though, Stancik hopes to add more awards and another State title to her collection this year as the Maidens fight for backto- back state titles.
