Soon after the Edna Independent School Board released a press release announcing that Superintendent Robert O’Connor would be retiring in early June, he left his position early and the board hired an interim Superintendent, Billy Boyd.
Boyd has been in education for over four decades and has worked in every size school district, from 1A to 6A, and worked around ten interim jobs.
“I was a classroom teacher for 18 years: a coach, an athletic director, a high school principal, and finally, school superintendent,” he said.”
He said his method of operation is: he arrives early and he stays late, not to mention, when he makes a decision, it’s based on what’s best for the students. The EISD board told him they appreciated his candor and his willingness to work hard five days a week.
Boyd spoke on transparency dealing with school matters.
“If you do not tell people what happened, many will write their own story. This district belongs to all stakeholders; everyone deserves to know what’s going on,” he said. “That being said, legally, there’s some items which cannot be shared with the masses.”
A little bit about Boyd: he’s the son of a WWII paratrooper and a housewife mom that raised him and his four siblings. He enjoys fishing, history, attending concerts and sporting events, vegetable gardening, and smoking meat on the barbecue pit.
“I have the best friends in the world,” he commented. “I have loved every aspect of my career and feel very fortunate that God led me at an early age to be an educator. I know in eighth grade that I wanted to be a coach and history teacher.”
His wife, Shely, is a retired educator by way of high school counselor. They met and married late in life, and he said she is the blessing of his life. Although they weren’t blessed with twolegged kids, he said, they have three Yorkies, Duke, Livy and Idabelle, plus two cats, Javier and Denze.
EISD are seeking answers from the community about what kind of traits they’re looking for in a new superintendent.
