Texana DRT Learn About Young Sam Houston

The Texana Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT) met on February 9 at the Farquhar Building in Edna. The program featured a presentation by Shanna Norris on the early life of Sam Houston (1793 –1863). Norris described the adventures of young Houston that led him to Texas. As a restless youth, Houston, who loved reading, left home at an early age and taught school in a oneroom schoolhouse in Maryville, Tennessee.

He then lived with the Cherokee Indians for several years, where he became known as Raven. Houston’s ventures brought him to Texas where he played a prominent role in the Texas Revolution. He served as the first and third president of the Republic of Texas, and represented Texas in the United States Senate. He was also the sixth governor of Tennessee and the seventh governor of Texas. Houston is the only individual to be elected governor of two different US states.

Texana Chapter is continuing plans for cohosting this year’s District meeting in September with Fannin Chapter in Victoria. The organization also looks forward to honoring Texas Independence and heroes of the Republic in March, which has been designated as Texas History Month.

The Texana Chapter of DRT meets monthly at the Farquhar Building and invites women who are interested in exploring and preserving Texas history to join. For more information about DRT, text 512-750-8903.
