This time of year, it seems as though there is one party after another, with everyone spreading cheer (and germs) along the way. Sources at Jackson County Hospital District report seeing an uptick inpatients presenting with influenza like illnesses since the Thanksgiving holidays.
Lana Janica, infection prevention nurse at JCHD said, “It’s the season for gathering. We’re traveling and spending more time indoors with many people, all of which make the spread of viruses more likely.”
Symptoms of ILIs may include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, fatigue, and headache. Children, older adults, pregnant individuals, and those with chronic health conditions are at higher risk for complications and should be especially cautious during the holiday season.
Physicians at JCHD encourage the community to enjoy celebrations while also taking steps to protect themselves and their loved ones. Stay home if you are feeling sick, wash hands frequently with soap and water, use hand sanitizer, cover coughs and sneezes, preferably with crook of your arm, and stay up-to-date on flu vaccinations.
“Our goal is not to dampen holiday spirit,” added Dr. Diana Mercado- Marmarosh, physician at JacksonCounty Medical Clinic of Edna. “It’s to help everyone stay healthy enough to enjoy the moments that matter most.”
Anyone experiencing severe symptoms, difficulty breathing, persistent high fever, or symptoms that worsen should seek medical care promptly. JCHD offers convenient care options, including medical clinics in Edna and Ganado and emergency services, to support the community throughout the holiday season.
