Cowboys down Marion, move to round three

The Edna Cowboys took on the Marion Bulldogs on Friday night and delivered another dominant postseason performance, securing a 38-14 victory to advance deeper into the playoffs.

Marion opened the game with the ball, but Edna immediately set the tone. Aidan Lugo stopped the return, and strong pass coverage from Jordon Bryant and Kyler Runnels forced an early punt.

The Cowboys’ offense began their drive on their own 41-yard line. Edna moved the ball quickly to begin the game before Maverick Robertson powered forward for short-yardage gain, and Trevor Floyd connected with Khylon Robinson for the first touchdown of the night. Jamie Gayton’s kick was good, making it 7– 0.

On the next defensive series, Jayron Barnes made a key stop before grabbing an interception, giving Edna the ball at their own 25.

The Cowboys picked up a couple of first downs before the game moved to the second quarter however Edna turned the ball over on downs early in the quarter, but their defense responded with a strong stand, forcing Marion to punt once again.

Floyd started the next drive with a pass to Robinson to give Edna a first down, and another to Robinson pushed the ball even closer. Floyd then found Hicks for another first down before finishing the drive himself with a touchdown run. Gayton’s kick was good, extending the lead to 14–0. Edna’s defense stayed dominant with stops from Robinson, Maro Carcamo, and Phoenix Robertson. Marion was forced to punt again, giving the Cowboys excellent field position.

After a run by Robinson, Floyd ran another keeper for a touchdown, and with the extra point, Edna stretched the lead to 21–0.

Edna started the second half on the wrong foot, losing a fumble which Marion recovered. However, Marion turned the ball right back to Edna when a tipped pass was intercepted by Hicks, giving Edna the ball.

Floyd connected with Zaevion Norman who slipped just short of a first down. A pass to Robinson moved the chains, and Norman powered through the middle for another first down. The Cowboys continued their methodical, steady progress down the field, with Hunter Beurhing picking up another first down. Floyd returned and kept the ball for a first down. He then found Hicks in the end zone for a touchdown. The extra point was good, giving Edna a 28– 0 lead.

On defense, Angel Olivares stopped a Marion run in the backfield, Buehring forced a runner out of bounds, and Ja’Dale Barnes and Jayron Barnes shut down a short pass. Hicks knocked away a pass in the end zone, but a penalty gave Marion a first down at the five-yard line. Marion punched in their first score, but Davell Mitchell sacked the quarterback on the two-point attempt, holding the score at 28–6.

The Cowboys opened the fourth quarter with a big play as Floyd launched a long pass to Hicks, who sprinted more than 30 yards into the end zone for another touchdown. The extra point was good, extending the lead to 35–6.

On the kickoff, Kyler stopped the return, and Phoenix followed it up with a quarterback sack. Buehring made a strong stop on the next play, holding Marion to a gain of just one, and Robertson added another sack to stall the drive. Edna took over on downs at the Marion 49yard line. Floyd kept the ball for a first down, and Adrian Boston then entered at quarterback.

He connected with Kason Rodas for a first down to the 16-yard line, setting up the kicking unit. Edna’s kicker connected on the field goal, pushing the lead to 38–6. Marion responded by returning the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown and converting the twopoint attempt, cutting the score to 38–14. Edna couldn’t get much going on the next possession and punted for the first time all night, with Floyd sending it away. Shortly after, Bode McCarrell intercepted a Marion pass to give the Cowboys the ball back.

Maverick Robertson after just coming back from an injury was asked how it felt to get back on the field. “It always feels good to support the team in any possible way and to be of aid to the offense in future games.”

The Cowboys secured the 38–14 victory, advancing once again in their postseason run. They’ll take on Ingram-Moore in the Regional Semi Finals on Friday, November 28th at 6 p.m. at the NB Canyon High School Cougar Stadium.
