DRT Members Learn about Edna’s Macaroni Line

The Texana Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas met on November 10 at the Farquhar Building, with nine members present.

The program featured a presentation by-JoLynne Strane Littlefield on the Macaroni Railroad line, which was built in Jackson County in the 1880’s. Count Telferner imported Italian laborers to work on the RR, which was to extend from Richmond to Mexico. Because macaroni was a staple of the worker’s diet, the enterprise soon became known as the “Macaroni Line.” Only 92 miles of line were built before the plan was dropped, but it impacted the culture and development of local towns, aiding growth in coastal Texas. Since 1885 it has been in the SouthernPacific system.
