The Edna Cowboys faced the San Diego Vaqueros on Thursday and brought home a dominant 63–7 win, securing the Bi-District Championship. San Diego received the kickoff to start the game, but the Cowboys’ defense quickly set the tone with strong stops by Maurice Tillman and Angle Oliveris, forcing an early punt. Edna’s offense wasted no time as quarterback Trevor Floyd handed off to Kyhlon Robinson. Floyd connected with Keegan Hicks and Aidan Lugo helping the Cowboys move downfield. A run by Floyd came up just shy of the goal line and a holding penalty stalled the drive.
On the next defensive series, a big stop made by Phoenix Robertson and Kyler Runnels caught an interception and ran it all the way in for a touchdown. Jaime Gayton’s kick was good, giving Edna a 7–0 lead.
Edna’s defense stayed relentless with stops by Angle, Khylond, and Kyler in the backfield. The Cowboys quickly regained possession, and Olivares, and Robinson moved the ball for a first down before handing off to Zaveion Norman, who powered into the end zone for another score. With the extra point, Edna extended its lead to 14–0.
The Cowboys recovered a San Diego fumble on the next drive and Floyd found Hicks for a first down before connecting with Jordon Bryant, who ran the ball into the end zone for a touchdown. The kick was good, giving Edna a 21– 0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Edna continued to control the pace with defensive stops by Jayron Barnes and Robertson, forcing another punt. The Cowboys then broke through the line and blocked the punt, giving the offense prime field position. Floyd and Hicks connected again for another touchdown. The extra point was good, pushing the score to 28–0.
On the next drive the Vaqueros made it to Edna’s one-yard line before Kyler Runelds forced them out of bounds, and the Cowboys’ defense held strong, taking over on downs.
Floyd continued spreading the ball, picking up first downs with keepers and passes to Hicks and Robinson. A rushing touchdown was called back for holding, but the Cowboys responded on the very next play, with Hicks pulling in a pass in the end zone for yet another score. The kick was good, sending Edna into halftime with a 35–0 advantage.
The Cowboys opened the third quarter with Lugo securing the kickoff and Robinson picking up back-to-back first downs. Floyd then connected with Lugo in the end zone for another touchdown. Gayton’s kick was good, stretching the lead to 42–0.
On defense, Robertson made a huge stop that forced yet another short Vaquero punt, giving the Cowboys possession deep in San Diego territory.
Backup quarterback Adrian Boston entered the game and handed off to Kason Rodas, who powered his way into the end zone for a touchdown. The kick was good, extending Edna’s lead to 49–0.
The fourth quarter opened with a massive backfield stop by Gi’zion Foley, turning the ball over on downs. After Curtis Tilman was tackled for a loss, he broke free on the next play for a 55-yard touchdown run, bringing the score to 56– 0 after the extra point.
San Diego finally broke through on their next drive, slipping into the end zone on third and goal to put their first points on the board, making it 56–7.
Edna answered immediately, as Devon Cruz returned the kickoff over 97 yards for a touchdown. Gayton’s kick was good, bringing the score to 63–7. Strong defensive stops by Bode McCarrell, Gi’zion Foley, and Mason Slusher kept San Diego from adding any more points as the Cowboys drained the clock.
The Edna Cowboys’ explosive offense and relentless defense delivered the 63–7 victory and crowned them Bi-District Champions. Key contributions came from the entire offensive line and a deep rotation of defensive standouts who controlled the game from start to finish.
When asked what his mind set was going into round two as a Senior leader, Trevor Floyd simply responded, “We aren’t finished yet!”
The Cowboys now turn their focus to the Area Round as they look to continue their postseason run with confidence and momentum. They will take on the Marion Bulldogs on Friday at 7 p.m. in Cuero.
