The Edna Cowboys faced the Palacios Sharks this past Friday and brought home another big win, defeating the Sharks 47–14. Orange Grove, the only team with a district win against Edna, was upset by London, giving the Cowboys the district championship.
Edna received the kickoff to start the game, and Aidan lugo wasted no time picking up the ball and running 67 yards for a touchdown. Jaime Gayton’s kick was good, putting the Cowboys up 7–0. Edna’s Keegan Hicks then recovered an onside kick followed by quarterback Trevor Floyd connected with Hicks for a 15-yard gain before keeping it himself for another first down.
A few plays later, Floyd handed off to Khylond Robinson for a first down, then threw to Hicks for another Cowboy touchdown. With the extra point, Edna led 14–0.
The Cowboys’ defense, led by Ja’dale Barnes, Phoenix Robertson, Hicks, and Maurice Tilmon, held strong, however Palacios found the end zone scoring a touchdown, though their two-point conversion failed, keeping the score 14–6. Edna quickly answered back as Floyd connected with Robinson for first down and then launched a long pass to Hicks for another touchdown. The kick was good, making it 21– 6.
In the second quarter, Floyd connected with Keith Wilkins for a long first down and followed up with another scoring pass to Jordon Bryant. The kick was blocked, putting Edna ahead 27– 6.
The Cowboys’ defense continued to dominate with key plays from Robertson, and Kenden Norman , forcing a punt. The offense kept rolling as Zaveion Normon ran in a touchdown. A bad snap on the extra point made it 33–6. Before the half, Floyd and Hicks connected again for a 30-yard touchdown to extend the Cowboys’ lead to 40-6 after a successful extra point.
In the third quarter, Adrian Boston stepped in as quarterback and connected with Kason Rodas and Wilkins for big first downs, pushing Edna deep into Palacios territory after a face mask penalty. Edna’s defense, with big stops from Grayson McCarrell and Robertson, held firm to close out the quarter.
Palacios opened the fourth quarter with a touchdown and a successful two-point conversion, narrowing the score to 40–14 but Edna wasn’t done yet as Norman powered through for another touchdown. The kick was good, bringing the score to 47– 14. Strong defensive stops by Grayson McCarrell, Bode McCarrell, Kenden, Mason slusher, Ja’dale, and Curtis Tilmon kept the Sharks from finding any more points as the Cowboys ran down the clock.
The Edna Cowboys’ strong offense and relentless defense secured the 47–14 victory and crowned them District Champions. Key performances came from the entire offensive line, including Thorton Barton, Michael Martin, Mauro Carcamo and Cornell Norman.
When asked about their last home game at Cowboy Stadium, senior Norman responded “Memories of my first game in junior high, to the hot two-a-days, to seeing my family and knowing that my last game on my field was in the history books. Bittersweet.”
The Cowboys finished their last home game and will carry their momentum into the playoffs as they look to continue their winning streak for a deep postseason run.
Edna (7-3) will face the San Diego Vaqueros (4-6) at the Tuloso-Midway High School Stadium on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
