Keep it real

M2 Christmas Tree Farm, located in El Toro, is having a grand opening on Friday, November 28 at 9 a.m. The farm is opening up to the public so everyone can begin looking for and buying the perfect tree for your family.

Susan Myers and her husband Richard, better known as Pat, planted their first crop in 2021. Since then, they’ve been planting 600-700 trees per year. Did you know it takes four to five years for a Christmas tree to be ready?

“The first ones we planted weren’t ready to sell until last year, but we weren’t ready to sell them just yet,” Susan said. “Our first crop was planted right before the big freeze and they survived in that cold. Unfortunately the drought got us really bad the last couple of years.”

Prices for a chooseand- cut Virginia Pine is $12 a foot, and nothing under five feet will be sold. They will also be selling Grade 1 pre-cut Fraser Firs, which will be brought in from a tree farm in North Carolina. The Firs will be a little more expensive.

“Fraser Firs are probably more like the Christmas trees we grew up with,” Susan said. “We saw them at our last convention and they’re really pretty, and very full.”

Families can also schedule an appointment for a Christmas photo session now, for Christmas cards or for a family portrait.

Susan gave some reasons as to why a real tree is better than a plastic one. For one, the trees are biodegradable, they can be recycled and ground up for compost, or even to put in a pond for a fish habitat.

“It’s not a lot of hard work until it is,” she commented. “Your arms get tired after trimming trees and shaping them for awhile.”

Susan and Pat came up with the name M2, because her maiden name also started with an M. Then after the couple married, they had two children, which made sense for the M2 name as well.

“When I bought the land from my mother we didn’t want to raise cows,” she added. “We have friends who cut their own Christmas trees, so we thought, ‘why can’t we do that here?’” To schedule an appointment for a photo session or to learn more about their grand opening, visit their website, sites.google. com/m2christmastrees. com/m2-christmas- tree-farm The M2 Christmas Tree Farm is located at 470 P.R. 1101 in El Toro.
