Cobras finish second in 25-3A, will face Poth Thursday

The Industrial Cobras are looking to make a strong District 25-3A finish into a springboard for success in the Class 3A Division II volleyball playoffs.

Industrial (33-14), ranked No. 19 in Class 3A by MaxPreps, wrapped up second place in 25-3A, losing only to Columbus, ranked No. 5 in MaxPreps and No. 6 by the Texas Girls Coaches Association.

The Cobras played a warmup game on Monday against Victoria West and now will face Poth in Bi-District at Cuero at 5 p.m. Thursday.

On Tuesday, the Cobras beat Yoakum 26-24, 25-17, 25-20 as Karli Stanush recorded 16 kills, three aces, a 2.1 serve receive rating, and 23 digs. Kaylee Honc had seven kills, 14 digs, two blocks, and an .867 defensive efficiency rating; Madi Kubecka had a hitting percentage of .250 and a kill percentage of 33.0; Kylee Swoboda had a serve receive rating of 2.0; and Ava Collins had 29 assists, a setting efficiency rating of .207, and a block.

Friday afternoon, the Cobras beat Hallettsville 25-22, 25-17, 25-10 to set their district record at 12-2.

Stanush had 14 kills, four aces, and a 1.9 serve receive rating; Lyla Ellison had eight kills; Kubecka had a .429 hitting percentage and a 42.9 kill percentage as well as a block; Honc had a 2.2 serve receive rating, 13 digs, and a .529 defensive efficiency rating; Swoboda had nine digs; Collins had 20 assists; and Ivy Sanchez had a .429 setting percentage.

Coach Tara Dunn said she liked the way her team was playing as it enters the playoffs.

“I think this last week was a great way to end district play,” Dunn said.

“Yoakum is very scrappy and Hallettsville is very aggressive offensively, so for us to step up and finish both games in three was huge for us going into playoffs. We were able to work on different aspects of our game that will be important.”

Having a deep roster of players able to step in and contribute gives the Cobras plenty of options against playoff opponents.

“We have a very wellrounded team this year, which is awesome,” Dunn said. “We have numerous girls that can take care of the ball on serve receive, defense, offense, etc., so they are able to step up for each other if one girl isn’t having her best game.

It’s taken some pressure off and allowed the team to just play for each other and have fun. It’s exciting to watch.”

Rather than look at the number of playoff matches necessary to hang a banner, Dunn said she prefers to take it one game at a time, starting with Poth on Thursday.

“Keeping the girls focused on the task at hand and not getting ahead of themselves is our current goal,” Dunn said. “We are a very talented team, but each girl has a job to do whether on the floor or on the bench. In order for us to be successful, each girl has to focus on their role for our first game vs Poth.

“We are excited for the opportunity to compete, and I cannot wait for these girls to showcase all of their hard work.”

The Cowgirls finished with a 15-25 overall record and 5-9 in district.

While the team missed the playoffs, it still made great strides, Coach Jenna Buzek said.

“Any time your season ends without going to the playoffs is always a little disappointing, but this team has so many things to be proud of this year,” Buzek said. “From where we started to where we ended was a whole different team. A lot of these girls grew into amazing volleyball players and teammates.

We had long, grueling matches which were so good for learning and growing throughout the season.

“I think our seniors left a positive mark of positivity and friendship, and I’m excited to have the underclassmen back for next year. This was a fun season to be a part of and I think the girls enjoyed their year. That’s all you can ask for!” Ganado Maidens

The Ganado Maidens wrapped up their volleyball season against Shiner and Louise.

Ganado lost to Shiner 13-25, 7-25, 9-25 and dropped the final match to Louise 9-25, 11-25, 625.

MaKinzie Tovar provided the spark for the Maidens with four kills and an ace.

Although the Maidens didn’t win many matches, Coach Kayla Weixelman said she saw plenty upon which to build next season.

“Throughout this season, though it may not have been reflected in our record, we improved a lot as players,” Weixelman said. “Everybody wants wins, but the best metric of success comes from analyzing you vs. you. If you continuously strive to make efforts to improve on you from yesterday, each tomorrow you will reap the benefits of those efforts.

Success isn’t linear, it takes consistency.

“The girls’ hard work and dedication showed up outside the stats columns. Our IQ went up, and our pace and confidence increased. These advancements were evident in each team. As an overall program we improved, and I’m proud of the progress and efforts from the girls.”
