The Edna Cowboys faced the Goliad Tigers on Friday and brought home another big win, defeating the Tigers 37– 28.
Goliad received the kickoff to start the game, but Edna’s defense quickly made its presence known, with strong stops led by Angel Oliveras and Phoenix Robertson. Ultimately the Tigers took a 7–0 lead early in the first quarter.
Edna responded when Maverick Robertson picked up an 8-yard gain before Trevor Floyd connected with Keegan Hicks for a 59-yard touchdown run. The kick was good, making the score tied 7–7.
Goliad regained the lead again with another touchdown, making it 14–7. Later in the second quarter, a fumble recovery by Thor Barton had the crowd on their feet.
In the second half, the game shifted completely in Edna’s favor. Floyd connected with Hicks for a big 35-yard pass to set up a touchdown, narrowing the score to 1413 after the kick. Goliad then followed with another touchdown making the score 21-13 but moments later, Robertson broke free from Goliad’s defence for an 84-yard touchdown, and a successful two-point conversion by Hicks tied the score at 21.
The Cowboys’ defense continued to shine, with Kyler Runnelds grabbing an interception. Hicks ran in a 66 yard touchdown making the score 28–21. Edna’s defence continued to be strong stopping Goliad on 4th and fice to go, resulting in a turnover on downs. Floyd connected with Keith Wilkins for a touchdown. The extra point was no good making it 34–21.
Goliad answered with another touchdown making the score 34-28. Edna ended the game with a field goal to seal the 37–28 victory.
Edna’s resilience and second-half dominance proved to be the difference, with key plays from Floyd, Robertson, Hicks and a relentless defensive unit with great stops by Robertson, Barton, and Marquise Tilman.
Edna Head Coach Jamie Dixon said “I’m very proud of the way they played & the effort they gave for all 48 minutes of the game.”
The win propelled Edna into a three-way tie for first place alongside Goliad and Orange Grove. The field goal at the end of the game was Edna adding more points to the point differential, in order to attempt to grab the district title. The Cowboys weren’t able to close the gap enough and barring an upset in the final two weeks of the season, Orange Grove will enter the playoffs as the first place team, Edna second, and Goliad third.
The Cowboys (5-3, 41) will play at West Oso (5-3, 2-3) on Friday before finishing the regular season by hosting Palacios (2-6, 1-4). Orange Grove will finish the season against Mathis (3-5, 2-3) and London (4-4, 3-2).
