A turning point

A turning point

Jackson County residents Donna Coleman and Jason Kucera felt honored to attend the funeral of Charlie Kirk, a Republican activist and founder of Turning Point USA, who was assassinated at an event in September.

“State Representative Matt Morgan reached out to me with information regarding Turning Point USA within Jackson County,” said Coleman, who serves as the Precinct 1 Chair for the Republican party in Jackson County.

Both Donna and Jason are active in local politics and dedicated Republicans. Donna even keeps a cardboard cutout of President Trump in her office.

During their conversation about possibly opening Turning Point USA chapters in local schools, Coleman said that Morgan also sent an invitation to Kirk’s memorial service in Arizona.

“The tragedy of Charlie Kirk getting assassinated the way he did was horrific,” she said. “It hit a deep spot in my heart because I am one to believe that everyone should be able to debate their feelings. If doesn’t matter who you are.”

There wasn’t much time to plan, and it was in a lot of ways a spur of the moment decision, but Donna and Jason just knew they needed to go.

“Jason and I spoke, and we just felt it in our hearts that we should take him up on the invitation that was sent, and we planned a trip to Phoenix, Arizona,” she said.

The memorial service, held at State Farm Stadium, was attended by thousands of people, and the pair returned to Jackson County motivated. They hope to put their energy into furthering what they say Kirk stood for.

“Jason and I know that we have a mission to help get Turning Point USA chapters started in our area, and we plan to do that,” she said.

Coleman hopes to help organize chapters in nearby schools.

“I have had a number of phone calls from people that say, ‘How can we help? We want to help you get this kicked off for our high school kids, for our college kids, even for our people in our communities. How do we get it started?’” she said. “And so with the help of State Representative Matt Morgan and the information that he’s provided, I do want to be that person in our community that people can go to, and if they have a question on how to get something started.”
