Oak Creek ready to share their growth

Oak Creek Village, a retirement community located on 58 Oak Creek Drive, is hosting an open house on Saturday, October 25, from 1 to 4 p.m., and front desk manager and resident Shirley Schmidt invites everyone to visit, whether they’re of age to live there or not. The village has received a facelift the residents want to share.

“We’ve installed upgrades and beautification to the village, plus a lot of landscaping,” she said. “We’re happy with the results.” Three house tours will be available to show tourists the renovations. To apply, one must be 55 years of age to lease, and 65 years to purchase.

Oak Creek Village began in 1985 by Anita Koop, who wanted to create a senior citizen independent living center where residents could be free from certain things people have to do, such as lawn care and other maintenance.

The village also gives residents freedom from worry about security.

“People would be more free to travel and know their house is safe,” Schmidt said.

The Rose family provided the land adjacent to the Edna Country Club for the development and provided streets, drainage and utilities to be arranged. Three houses were first built by Friendly Acres Inc. of Edna, a nonprofit organization, and continued to where they are now, at 12 units.

Residents can also enjoy the recreation center for crafts, cards, dominoes and other games. A room is also available by reservation for a small family

or organization meetings. “People may have forgotten we’re out here,” Schmidt said.

“So we’re hoping people will come out.”
