Repentance Today
“ Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out,” (Acts 3:19, ESV) The Bible is clear: every one of us has sinned and needs to repent (Romans 3:23; Luke 13:3).
That’s not just a truth for ancient Israel or the early church. It’s a truth for today.
The good news is that God has already provided a path to forgiveness for our sins in the blood of Jesus (Hebrews 10:14). Because of Him, repentance is not hopeless groveling but a real opportunity for forgiveness and a new beginning.
But repentance is more than words. It’s more than saying, “I’m sorry.” Jesus said repentance must be genuine, from the heart, and shown in how we live (Matthew 21:29, 32). Paul described it as godly sorrow that produces a real change (2 Corinthians 7:10). If we’ve lied, repentance means telling the truth (Ephesians 4:25). If we’ve wronged someone, repentance means making it right. Repentance is a turn away from sin and a turn toward God.
When we repent, God promises blessings. When we first come to Christ and repent and are baptized, God promises forgiveness and cleansing and peace (Acts 2:38; 26:18; Rom. 5:1). If we are already in Christ and we repent, God promises forgiveness as well (1 John 1:9). Without repentance, we remain separated from God (Luke 13:3). With repentance, we find life, because God “does not wish that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance” (2 Peter 3:9).
The question is not whether you need to repent, but whether you will. God calls you to turn today (2 Corinthians 6:2). He stands ready to forgive, to restore, and to give you a new life in Christ.
