Edna opened their first district game of the season against Orange Grove on Friday night in a hard-fought battle from start to finish. The Cowboys gave it their all but ultimately came up short, losing to the Bulldogs 21– 34.
Edna started the game by kicking to Orange Grove, who were quickly stopped by Angel Oliveras and Maverick Robertson.
After a few plays, Trevor Floyd passed to Keegan Hicks for a 58-yard touchdown, followed by a good kick, making the score 7– 0. Orange Grove answered with a touchdown of their own, but their kick was no good, keeping Edna in the lead at 7–6.
Later, Orange Grove scored again, making it 13–7.Edna got the ball on their 36 after a strong punt return and quickly moved it down the field. Maverick Robertson broke through a few tackles for a first down, and Trevor added more yards on a run to finish the first quarter.
Early in the second quarter, Edna moved the ball deep into Orange Grove’s side but couldn’t score a touchdown. Jamie Gayton made a field goal to bring the score to 13–10. Orange Grove then scored again, making it 20–10 at halftime. Despite the challenges, Edna’s defense held strong, keeping the game competitive.
Edna started the third quarter with some good progress, but mistakes and an interception slowed their drive. Orange Grove scored again, making it 27–10. Edna refused to back down, pushing hard and moving the ball all the way to the 1-yard line by the end of the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Orange Grove scored early, making it 34–10. Edna’s defense came up big with tackles by Kobyn Molina, Marquise Tilmon, and Phoenix Robertson, including a crucial stop by Jamar Barns. The Cowboys kept fighting after a punt return to their 35. With strong runs by Maverick, he eventually caught a pass for a touchdown, followed by a good kick from Jamie Gayton, making the score 21– 34. Edna recovered an onside kick, but a late interception ended the game.
Quarterback Trevor Floyd, who returned after an injury, said, “Felt alright, still getting back in the groove of things. Once we get back on track, we’ll be good.” The Edna Cowboys (1-3) had a rough game but will come back next week even stronger for their homecoming game against Aransas Pass (1-3).
