Indians win shoot out over East Bernard 56-45

After a huge week one win over a top 20 team in Van Vleck, the Ganado Indians held on for a one-point win over Boling in week two. Week three brought on East Bernard, a team the Indians have had trouble with as the Brahmas handed the Indians their lone loss of 2024. This time, both teams brought their offenses and the Indians were able to outscore East Bernard on their way to a 56-45 win.

Logan Bures got the Indians on the board first with a kickoff return for a touchdown to bring the score to 70 in the first quarter. The Brahmas didn’t score in the first quarter, but they made up for it for the rest of the game.

Ganado put up 14 in the second quarter while East Bernard put up 13 to give Ganado an eight point halftime lead.

Aided by several penalties against the Brahmas, the Indians drove the field and Cade Nixon hauled in a reception to get Ganado another seven in quarter three. Both team continued scoring as Ganado held a 35-27 lead heading to the final quarter.

A couple of minutes into the fourth quarter, the Brahmas pulled within two 35-33 but Ganado wasn’t stopping either as they rebuilt their lead to 42-33. With the game winding down, East Bernard was about to put up back-toback stops when Landyn Arriaga showed that every once in a while, you have to get lucky too, as one of his passes was tipped, but right into the hands of an Indian who ran it in to extend the Indian lead to 49-33.

The Brahmas made a final barrage at the end of the game, putting up 14 points to pull within 49-45 before Ganado added a final touchdown to finish with the nine point win.

Arriaga finished with 253 passing yards and five touchdowns. Bures and Sean Willis added two touchdowns while Nixon added one. Bures finished the game with 383 all purpose yards.

On defense, John Utley, Michael Tristan, and Jayden Hernandez all pitched in a sack while Arriaga hauled in an interception.

Next week the Indians will host Tidehaven, in a much anticipated match-up of top five ranked teams. Both teams are 3-0 and offensively, the teams have scored close to the same amount of points with Tidehaven putting up 145 to Ganado’s 132. But defense is where a huge gap forms.

Tidehaven has allowed only 14 points, compared to 85 for Ganado. The Tigers defeated a 1-2 Palacios team 72-0, Goliad (2-1) team 387, and Hallettsville (0-3) 357.
