The Edna Cowboys played the Bay City Blackcats at their home field Friday night. The ending score was 42-14, with the Bay City Blackcats taking the victory.
The first quarter was rough for the Cowboys, with Bay City running a kickoff into the endzone, making the score 7-0. Edna had a few good plays, but Bay City scored another touchdown, ending the first quarter with a lead of 14-0.
Despite this start, Edna continued to show determination and good sportsmanship into the second quarter. Maverick Robertson gained good yardage, but it was ultimately called back because of a holding penalty. Hunter Buehring and Phoenix Robertson sacked the Black Cats’ quarterback, but the next play they answered with a handoff and a run in for another touchdown, making the score 21-0.
The Edna Cowboys came back stronger in the second half, with an over 65 yard punt return made by Keegan Hicks. With Ryland Slusher driving just short of the goal line, Maverick Robertson ran into the end zone for a touchdown early in the third quarter, getting Edna on the board 21-7.
After a short Bay City possession, which included a quarterback sack by Marquis Tillman, the Cowboys took over on the 49-yard line, and Maverick Robertson broke through tackle after tackle for another Cowboys touchdown, making the score 21-14.
Unfortunately for Edna, that was as close as they would get.
Bay City moved their lead up to 28-14 while Edna kept pushing and on their next possession, Maverick Robertson gained nice yardage, and Keegan Hicks caught a clutch pass from Adrian Boston. Boston’s pass to Buehring was also caught for another Cowboys first down. Unfortunately, the Cowboys couldn’t convert those plays to points on the board. Bay City managed another touchdown, ending the third quarter with a score of 35-14.
In the fourth quarter, Aidan Lug intercepted the ball near the Cowboys endzone stopping a Bay City touchdown. Edna had a few more good plays throughout the fourth quarter, but Bay City scored a final time, making the final score 42-14.
The Defensive Coordinator Matt Trujillo said, “The team did a great job of giving ourselves a chance to get back in the game after halftime. Ultimately, we gave up too many big plays, but we continued playing hard the entire game. Bay City is a very talented team, and a lot of our guys got some valuable experience against a great team. That will pay off down the road.”
The Cowboys never gave up, fought all the way till the end of the game, and will have to come back next week even stronger as they take on the Refugio Bobcats (2-0) at their first away game.
