Local volleyball teams wrapped up tournament action over the last two weekends.
For Edna and Industrial, last Friday also marked the end of the pre-district season, as the eight-team District 253A began play on Tuesday.
Ganado’s district does not open until Sept. 23.
Tuesday’s games included Edna at Rice Consolidated and Tidehaven at Industrial. On Friday, Industrial hosts Edna and Ganado travels to Brazos, and on Tue., Sept. 16,Edna hosts Hallettsville, Industrial travels to Columbus, and Ganado is at Yorktown.
Industrial Cobras
Kylee Swoboda earned All-Tournament Team honors at the Seguin Matador Classic on Labor Day weekend as the Industrial Cobras won five of their eight matches to place sixth overall and second in the consolation Gold Bracket.
Industrial lost its opening round match to San Antonio Christian, 25-23, 20-25, 1625, then defeated Del Valle 25-13, 25-14, beat Bryan Rudder 25-12, 25-14, beat SanAntonio Marshall 25-7, 26-24, and beat MacArthur 25-19, 25-16, before losing to Taft24-26, 28-30. On the final day of the tournament, the Cobras lost to Wimberley 9-25,17-25, defeated San Antonio Christian 21-25, 25-19, 25-22, and lost to Stevens 2729, 17-25.
Wimberley is ranked fifth in Class 4A by MaxPreps, sixth by Texas VolleyballInsiders, and eighth by the Texas Girls Coaches Association.
The Cobras returned to action on Tue., Sept. 2 at Rockport- Fulton, falling 23-26, 25-19, 25-20, 22-25, 13-15.
Leading the team statistically were Karli Stanush with 24 kills, a kill percentage of 32.4, 26 digs, and a serve-receive rating of 2.1; Lyla Ellison with seven kills, a servereceive rating of 2.3, and a defensive efficiency of .867 percent;Clancy Kolle with a hitting percentage of .231 and four blocks; Claire Karl with four aces; Kylee Swoboda with 17 digs; Ava Collins with 19 assists and a setting efficiency of .306; and Madi Kubecka with a block.
Industrial rebounded with a win Friday over Victoria East, 25-21, 24-26, 25-12, 25-20. Statistical leaders included Stanush with 17 kills, a serve-receive rating of 2.3, and30 digs; Kaylee Honc with 15 kills; Kolle with a .385 hitting percentage, a kill percentage of 42 percent, and a block; Aerlin Bethany with two aces; Swoboda with a 2.0 serve-receive rating and 23 digs; Collins with .875 defensive efficiency rating and 25 assists; Karl with a setting efficiency of .309; and Kubecka with a block.
As of Sunday, the Cobras were ranked No. 14 by Texas Volleyball Insiders and No.20 by MaxPreps.
Edna Cowgirls
The Cowgirls competed in the Goliad Tournament over Labor Day weekend, losing to state-ranked Goliad 4-25, 6-25, then beating El Campo 25-23, 21-25, 15-13, defeating Sinton 25-21, 25-22, and falling to Victoria St. Joseph 23-25, 18-25. No stats were reported.
Edna followed up the tournament by beating Gonzales, 25-18, 14-25, 25-9, 1725, 15-13, on Tue., Sept. 2.
Avery Garcia recorded seven kills, three blocks, and 14 digs; Emersyn Duarte had four kills and two blocks; Julie Koch had two aces and 15 digs; Keira Santellana had an ace, six kills, three blocks, and two digs; Kelly Laredo had three kills, 15 digs, and 14assists; Leighton Hunt had seven digs, four kills, a block and nine assists; MarleeHolmes had 11 digs and one assist; Serenity Barrera had three kills; and Rihanna-Woods had one kill and two blocks.
They wrapped up their non-district schedule Friday with a 25-19, 15-25, 21-25, 22-25 loss at Rockport-Fulton.
Garcia had 10 kills, two blocks, and 14 digs; Duarte had five kills, a block, and a dig; Koch had an ace and 17 digs; Santellana had seven kills, five blocks, and two digs;Laredo had two aces, two kills, seven digs, and 13 assists; Hunt had four aces, 12 digs, a kill, and 10 assists; Holmes had 23 digs and a kill; Marianna Ackley had a kill and two digs; Barrera had two kills; and Woods had a kill and three blocks.
Ganado Maidens
The Ganado Maidens defeated Bloomington to open play in the Ganado Varsity-Tournament on Thursday, 2515, 16-25, 15-8.
In the win, Rhylee Smith recorded a tip, two free ball kills, four aces, and a kill; Gwen Reid had a kill and two tips; Michaela Estrada had a kill, four aces, and a tip; Mackenzie Tovar had three aces, a tip, a free ball kill, and a block; Avery Torres had two aces; Addison Tudyk had two tips and four aces; Kyla Stancik had eight aces, two kills, and a free ball kill; and Cali Beard had a kill and a tip.
The Maidens lost to Louise, 16-25, 15-25; lost to Danbury, 9-25, 13-25; and toYorktown, 25-16, 13-25, 1315.
In the three losses, Smith had two aces, a free ball kill, and a block; Reid had six kills, a tip and a block; Estrada had three kills, six aces, four tips, and a free ball kill;Tovar had four kills, two tips, and two aces; Torres had three kills and an ace; Tudyk had two aces, a block, and a kill; Stancik had three aces and two kills; and Beard had two kills and a free ball kill.
Prior to the tournament, the Maidens lost to Palacios on Sept. 2 in three sets, 1625, 27-29, 14-25.
