Volleyball Round-Up

The Cobras (15-6) started off the week strong, beating both Cuero and Calhoun in a dual match on Tuesday In the first match, Industrial defeated Cuero 2523, 25-11, 25-13 behind Kaylee Honc’s 11 kills and two blocks; Karli Stanush’s five kills and 13 digs; Ava Collins’s 14 assists; Claire Karl’s seven assists and seven digs; Clancy Kolle’s two blocks and three aces; and Myla Barrientos’s two aces.

The Cobras finished the evening by defeating Calhoun, ranked 10 th in the TGCA pre-season poll, 25-21, 27-25, 24-26, 2628, 17-15 in a gritty five games. Stanush had 17 kills, 28 digs and three aces; Collins had 12 kills and 23 assists; Karl had 18 assists and an ace; Honc and Kolle had four blocks each; and Kylee Swoboda made 32 digs.

Industrial continued to play well against tough competition, finishing sixth out of 32 teams overall and in second place in Silver Bracket at the Bastrop Tournament over the weekend.

The Cobras opened the tournament Thursday by defeating Bryan Rudder 25-21, 25-15; Elgin 25-13, 25-17; and Seguin 18-25, 25-22, 25-19. They beat Chaparral 25-20, 25-20 and Thorndale 25-18, 2510 on Friday before losing to Aubrey, ranked No. 8 in Class 4A in the Texas Volleyball Insider Week 2 poll, 11-25, 14-25, which dropped them into the Silver Bracket. On Saturday, the Cobras beat Iowa Colony 25-18, 25-18, but lost to London 23-25, 17-25 to finish second in the bracket.

Swoboda was named to the All-Tournament team.

Weekend stats leaders included Stanush with 52 kills, 66 digs and a 2.2 serve- receive rating; Honc with 39 kills and five blocks; Kolle with nine aces; Collins with nine aces and 59 assists; Barrientos with 55 digs; Lyla Ellison with five blocks; and Swoboda with a 2.1 serve-receive rating.

Industrial played at Goliad, ranked No. 7 by the TGCA and No. 1 by TVI, on Tuesday and will compete in the Seguin Varsity Tournament over Labor Day Weekend. They play at Rockport Fulton on Tue., Sept. 2. Industrial is ranked No. 14 in the TVI poll for Week 2 and No. 14 in MaxPreps Class 3A rankings.

Edna Cowgirls

Edna (7-11) found its rhythm over the weekend, winning five straight games during the Schulenburg Tournament.

The Cowgirls lost their first two games on Thursday to St. Joseph 1525, 20-25 and to Shiner 2325, 21-25, but found their footing afterward to roll up five straight wins. The team defeated Gonzales 25-17, 25-16; Snook 2512, 25-18; Flatonia JV 2511, 25-9; Flatonia 25-14, 25-21; and Gonzales again 25-22, 25-10; but lost their final game to Poth 22-25, 21-25.

In the eight tournament games, Avery Garcia had 39 kills, 49 digs and three aces; Emersyn Duarte had 16 kills, five digs and five blocks; Julie Koch had 52 digs and nine aces; Keira Santellana had 38 kills, 10 blocks and three digs; Kelly Laredo had 28 digs, 59 assists, eight aces and five kills; Leighton Hunt had 37 digs, 34 assists, five aces, 11 kills and two blocks; Mariana Ackley had 12 aces, 10 digs, three blocks and 10 kills; Marlee Holmes had 68 digs, four aces, four assists and a kill; Rihanna Wood had six kills and 12 blocks; Serenity Barrera had two blocks, nine kills and two digs; and Blaykeslee Pieprzyca had a kill.

Earlier in the week, the Cowgirls pushed Class 5A Victoria East, but lost in four games, 26-24, 1825, 19-25, 21-25 on Aug.

This week, the Cowgirls traveled to Shiner on Tuesday. They will compete in the Goliad Tournament over the weekend and return home to host Gonzales on Tue., Sept. 2.

Ganado Maidens The Maidens earned a three-game win over Bloomington Friday, beating the Bobcats 25-18, 25-- 20, 25-15. Rhylee Smith served eight aces to go with five kills and two tips; Gwen Reid had four kills; Michaela Estrada recorded seven kills, three aces and a tip; Mackenzie Tovar posted five aces, a kill, a block and a tip; Avery Torres served five aces; Addison Tudyk had three kills and a block; Kyla Stancik had seven aces; and Raelynn Peters had two aces and a free ball kill.

This week, the Maidens played Rice Consolidated on Tuesday and will compete over Labor Day Weekend in the Rice Consolidated Varsity Tournament. They return home on Tue., Sept. 2 to host Palacios.
