A unanimous decision was reached during a board meeting on July 8 in a closed session. Colvin is currently the Director of Administration and Supportive Services for Comfort ISD. In the IISD press release, it stated Colvin “leads with integrity, strategic vision, and a commitment to creating supportive environments for learning and leadership.”

The new superintendent has also served at Lockhart ISD, in addition to Comfort. Named the 2023 Region 13 Principal of the Year, IISD sees it as “a testament to his ability to inspire teams, lead with purposes and implement initiatives which yield measurable results.”

IISD’s Board of Trustees released a survey in early June of 2025, asking the community what sort of traits would be best suited for a new superintendent. On July 9, they reported 240 surveys were completed, which helped guide the trustees to choose the best candidate for the job.

Integrity and trust, an advocate for the district, staff, students and community, child-centered, a commitment to the community, and a strong decision maker, were the characteristics the surveys ended up asking for. As for skills, leadership, communication, financial, managerial, and interpersonal, were reported in the top five.

“Mike Colvin is a dedicated, student-centered educational leader with a deep-rooted passion for fostering growth and achievement in both students and staff,” the press release stated. “With over 20 years of experience in teaching in campus and district-level administrative roles, Colvin has built a career centered on equity, collaboration, and academic excellence.”

Colvin has been married to his wife, Anna, for 23 years. Anna is also an educator as well. The two are raising two children, a freshman in high school, and a daughter who will be attending Texas A&M University to study biomedical science.

Colvin will officially report to IISD as superintendent after the 21-day state required waiting period, beginning July 9.
