People Who Are Committed to One Another

If following Jesus truly matters to us, then being a part of a faithful local church should matter too. Last week, we considered how a church must be committed to Jesus as Lord. But genuine faith in Christ also leads to love for His people. We should be looking for a church that’s not only committed to Christ, but also to one another (1 John 4:20-21).

When a group claims to follow Jesus, they are claiming to be one body in Christ (1 Cor. 12:12-13). That has real implications. As members of one body, believers are called to mutual care, accountability, and spiritual encouragement (1 Pet. 1:22; Heb. 10:24-25).

How can we recognize this kind of church?

First, a healthy church takes responsibility for its members. They know who belongs, and they work to help each other grow in faith and godliness (Gal. 5:22-23; 6:2). They gather regularly, not out of habit, but to stir up one another to love and good works (Heb. 10:24-25).

Second, they equip one another through shared time, teaching, and worship. Look for a church where members are encouraged to learn, serve, and use their gifts to build up the body (Acts 2:42-47; Eph. 4:11-16).

Third, they share life together. In the early church, believers not only worshipped together, they cared for each other’s needs and shared their lives in practical, relational ways (Acts 2:44-47; Rom. 12:15-16).

True commitment to Jesus will show itself in how believers treat each other (John 13:34-35). So, what about you? Are you part of a church where people truly love one another, and are you someone who shares that love with others?
