Cowboys match Tigers in first half, but fall short in Regional loss

For two and half quarters Edna matched Goliad shot for shot in the Regional playoff game, but by the end of the game, the high flying Tigers offense pulled away with a 57-31 victory last Friday night.

Goliad opened the game with the ball and picked up 30 yards before being forced to punt. The Cowboys got the ball at their own 10 yard line but a bad snap resulted in a fumble Goliad recovered. The Tigers then quickly scored and added a two point conversion to take an 8-0 lead.

The Cowboys defense stepped up again on the next Tiger drive. Kobe Giles started off the first quarter all over the field, batting down a pass, pressuring the quarterback, and making several tackles. Facing a 3rd and 10, Tiger quarterback Rocky Morris threw up a desperation pass that fell into a receiver’s hands in the endzone with several Cowboys unable to knock the ball away.

Headed into the second quarter, Goliad held a 14-0 lead and gained the confidence to blow out Edna, but the Cowboys continued to fight. With the offense sputtering and Goliad aggressively attacking the line to stop the Cowboys running game, Edna ran a play that gave the offense some much needed momentum.

Quarterback Thomas Long dropped deep in an apparent pass attempt but it was actually a draw-play and Kenny Haynes finally found some big yardage, gaining 20 yards. He then followed that up with a 15-yard touchdown run, and the Cowboys began clawing their way back, trailing 14-7.
