Edna vs Industrial recap

 By Michael Brooks

The Edna Cowboys defeated the Industrial Cobras 49-13 for their seventh consecutive victory in the Lavaca River Showdown.

Friday was also Edna's homecoming and despite head coach Jerry Long having concerns about the day's activities being a distraction, the Cowboys came out focused and were firing in all phases of their game.

Edna recieved the opening kickoff and immediately went to work. Kenny Haynes finished off the 48 yard drive with a 10 yard touchdown run.

The Cobras put together a 50 yard drive on their opening possession but the Cowboy defense came up with a big stop on a fourth and three and the Edna offense went back to work again.

This time the Cowboys went 66 yards for their second touchdown, with Haynes picking up 62 of those yards, and his second rushing touchdown of the night, to give Edna a 14-0 lead.

The Cobras would answer back when Karston Wimberly finished off a Cobra 85 yard drive with a 7 yard touchdown run that cut Edna's lead to 14-7.

Haynes would then add two 14 yard touchdown runs and Dayton Mccoy would add a 3 yard touchdown run that gave Edna a 35-7 lead.

Industrial would put together one last drive before halftime but came up short on a 4th and two attempt from the Cowboy four yard line and Edna took the 35-7 lead to halftime.

Edna came out driving again in the second half and Mccoy would add another three yard touchdown to cap a Cowboy 52 yard drive halfway through the third quarter.

Edna's offense was stopped for the first time with nine minutes left in the final quarter and the Cobras offense came to life when Wimberly finished an 86 yard drive with a 14 yard touchdown run to cut Edna's lead to 42-13.

Deleon Mitchell would add a one yard touchdown run with just over a minute left in the game that gave Edna the 49-13 final score.

With the victory, and with Yoakum's victory over Van Vleck, Edna locked up a playoff spot. Edna will travel to Altair next Friday to face Rice and will finish the regular season off against Hallettsville.

The loss eliminated Industrial from playoff contention. The Cobras will face Yoakum next Friday and then will finish the season off against Palacios.
