R.L. Toalson at Memorial Library

Check It Out at the Library – September 2018

We are very excited to be hosting a visiting author this month. R.L. Toalson will be here on Thursday, September 20th from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. She will be discussing the story behind her new middle grade fiction release, Colors of the Rain. R. L. Toalson is a former graduate of Industrial High School and we are so excited to have her come and bring copies of her brand new book. Please join us that evening for a fun evening of visiting and hearing this author speak of the writing behind the book. You will have a chance to buy her book at this time also. Refreshments will be served and the computer area closed off to give us more room.

We will still have Paws to Read that evening as well from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m.

September is “National Library Card” Month! If you do not have a Jackson County Memorial Library card, you are really missing out! Did you know that a library card is totally free? Just look at what a library card can give you: access to over 24,000 print materials including books for adults, middle school children, young adults, and children plus magazines and this number doesn’t even include the e-books we offer that can be downloaded for free; 2,279 audio books, children and adults; 190 reference materials; and 940 DVD’s including educational, movies, and popular series.  Your card also gives you access to our library computers and programs! We sincerely hope that if you don’t have a library card, you will come by and get one during the month of September.

If you need any additional motivation to get a library card, here’s some things to make you stop and think about how important our library is.

  • Did you know that Google gives a patron 50,000 responses but a librarian gives patrons help in finding the ONE answer they need!
  • Did you know that less than 44% of top 100 US retailers accept in-store applications? Patrons need our computers to help them get jobs.
  • Did you know that studies show categorically that children who enter kindergarten without a book-rich experience enter far behind those who have been exposed to books? Our library offers the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Program, Mother Goose story time and Paws 2 Read program, not to mention our Summer Reading Program! Get your child involved by getting a library card.

It is once again time for our annual weeding of the collection. We have a report that shows us which books haven’t been checked out in the last three years. This is the main criteria for weeding although we look at worn books to replace as well.  There is a book cart in the hallway in front of the library with lots of free materials to choose from. Take as many as you like but please don’t bring them back! Pass them on to friends or relatives.
