Owner reminisces about 40-year business

          Alton Hermes, owner of Hermes & Steffek Fertilizer in Edna, has polished his tools and cleaned up his equipment to sell his business after 40 years.

    Hermes & Steffek Fertilizer has spent the last four decades providing products like fertilizer, lime, fencing materials, feed, and hardware to Jackson County and surrounding areas.

    “I’ve actually been in the business for 51 years. My company opened its doors in 1978,” Hermes said.

    He reminisced about the days before agriculture technology. He recalls a time in 1973 when he  did work for  Bill Bauer of Bauer Dredging Company in Port Lavaca.
